Indian Languages The SIL  Ethnologue lists 415 living languages for India. Language families : Indo-European (ca. 74%) - some 700 million speakers Dravidian (ca. 24%) - 200 million speakers Austroasiatic ( Munda ) (ca. 1.2%) - 10 million speakers Tibeto-Burman (ca. 0.6%) - 6 million speakers 1,652 mother tongues (languages) in India.

At present there are 22 official languages of India. Union level : Hindi, English Official languages : Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri , Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali , Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.

How is English used? English is used for: --business --education -- administration and law. The Indian Constitution states that all rules and regulation, bylaws etc. are to be in English. Science and Medicine follow the western pattern and are written in English. College education, the names of shops, most advertising are in English. In television, English is used for news and political programs; television serials are in Indian Languages.
