The aim of this study is to discuss the environmental laws and the measures to practice
sustainability in Business in Bangladesh. Currently, the prominent legal instrument is the
Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act (BECA), enacted in 1995, Though older legal
provisions include the Wildlife Preservation Order enacted in 1973 and Marine Fisheries
Ordinance passed in 1983. These laws encompass pollution prevention, specifically, the
protection of species of wildlife and environmental review.
The RMG industry of Bangladesh is accelerating integration of green business activities in the
industry to improve sustainability and competitiveness. They encompass green production
processes, materials used in marketing, and ways in which products are disposed, targeting the
green consumers.
Bangladesh supports the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and concentrates on
energy, water & sanitation, consumption and climate, and life below water and on land. While
there are various consequences of the economic and social development process damaging the
environment, the government and the World Bank supports sustainable utilization of resources
and protection of the environment.
Some methods of estimating sustainability include sustainability reports, greenhouse gas
emissions, energy consumption, ESG ratings, and materiality evaluation. Thus, to enhance
sustainability reporting, it is necessary for businesses to introduce the following elements:
anticipation of new regulation, consideration of stakeholder demands, adherence to existing
frameworks, periodical assessment of the sustainability reports, and selection of the right
reporting media.
But Bangladesh also has problems like climate change, rising urbanization issues, and
pollution. The measures for green growth involve developing hi-tech and renewable energy,
eco-agriculture, green transportation, efficient waste disposal, resource conservation, climate
proof structures and infrastructure, environment-friendly industries, knowledge upgrade, and
inclusive green growth. These efforts are geared to reduce the adverse impact of the
environment on Economic development.

Laws of Environment and Sustainable Business Practices in Bangladesh Achal Rahman, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology
Introduction Environmental laws are the legal frameworks that protect the natural environment. The Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act (BECA) was enacted in 1995 to protect the environment. Sustainable business practices consider the environmental impact of products and services.
Objectives of Environmental Laws 1. Pollution Prevention: Implementing policies to prevent pollution. 2. Environmental Impact Assessment: Ensuring projects undergo environmental evaluations. 3. Environmental Conservation: Preserving ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources.
Sustainable Business Practices Sustainable business practices aim to balance competitiveness and environmental safety. They involve eco-friendly production, marketing, and disposal of products. The RMG sector in Bangladesh is adopting green business initiatives to improve sustainability.
Measuring Sustainability Efforts 1. Sustainability Reports: Assess performance against ESG standards. 2. Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Measure and reduce emissions. 3. Energy Consumption: Monitor and reduce energy use. 4. ESG Ratings: Evaluate performance on sustainability factors. 5. Materiality Assessment: Identify and prioritize key sustainability issues.
Improving Sustainability Reporting 1. Don't Wait for Mandates: Proactively prepare for new regulations. 2. Acknowledge Stakeholder Needs: Address concerns of communities, employees, investors, and customers. 3. Use Reporting Frameworks: Follow established guidelines like SASB and GRI. 4. Monitor and Measure Performance: Set goals and track progress using KPIs. 5. Select the Correct Channels: Choose appropriate platforms for reporting.
Key Environmental Issues in Bangladesh - Population density and poverty - Unplanned urbanization and industrialization - Natural disasters (cyclones, floods, etc.) - Global warming - Forest depletion and habitat loss - Water, air, and soil pollution - Waste management challenges
Environmental Policies - National Environment Policy (1995) - National Forest Policy (1994) - Wetland Policy for Bangladesh - Energy Policy (1996) - Fishery Policy (1998) - Water Policy (1999) - Industry Policy (1999) - Agriculture Policy (1999)
Challenges in Environmental Law - Climate change vulnerability - Population density and urbanization - Poverty and income inequality - Environmental degradation - Public health concerns - Political instability - Infrastructure gaps - Educational system challenges - Corruption - Global economic uncertainties
Green and Sustainable Growth Path 1. Renewable Energy: Invest in solar, wind, and hydropower projects. 2. Sustainable Agriculture: Promote organic farming and efficient water management. 3. Improving Public Transportation: Develop mass transit and electric vehicles. 4. Effective Waste Management: Implement recycling and waste-to-energy projects. 5. Natural Resource Protection: Increase afforestation and protect wetlands. 6. Climate-Resilient Infrastructure: Build flood-resistant structures. 7. Green Industries and Finance: Encourage eco-friendly manufacturing. 8. Education and Awareness: Integrate environmental education. 9. Strengthening Policies: Enforce environmental regulations. 10. Inclusive Growth: Ensure sustainable development benefits all segments of society.
Conclusion Bangladesh's environmental laws and sustainable business practices aim to balance environmental preservation and economic growth. Challenges include climate change, urbanization, and pollution. Efforts focus on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and effective waste management to achieve sustainable development.
