Leadership and Change Agents in Diversity

What it takes to be a leader: Model: Lead by example, by creating principles and standards for all to follow (Kouzes, J., & Posner, B., n.d.). Shared Vision: Leaders create a shared vision for where they want the organization to go (Kouzes, J., & Posner, B., n.d.). Challenge the Process: Find innovative ways to work towards improvement and implements small task and goals to be achieved (Kouzes, J., & Posner, B., n.d.). Enable Others to Act: Encourages others in the organization through collaboration, trust, respect, and dignity to motivate them to act (Kouzes, J., & Posner, B., n.d.). Encourage the Heart: recognizing and appreciating others within the organization to keep determination flowing (Kouzes, J., & Posner, B., n.d.).

Diversity and Leadership Diversity empowers minorities to take on leadership roles in higher education throughout the United States. Women and other minority races face difficulties attaining equality and valuable leadership roles than men or the white population (Eagly & Carli, 2007p.18). Incorporating leadership strategies might help: Be observant Adapt to the environment Build Relationships

Change Agent A change agent is a leader who inspires others to make changes in the organization by defining, supporting, and having the courage to do what is best for the particular setting. Being an effective leader who successfully implements change in an organization can be challenging; it requires respecting one another's ideas and values.

Inspirational Influencers of Diversity- Change Agents Abraham Lincoln- (1809-1865)Freeing slaves by creating the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Followed by the 13 th Amendment. Sylvia Mendez-(1946)Civil Rights Activist who fought in a court case to stop segregation in schools in California. Rosa Parks- (1913-2005) Civil Rights Activist who refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white woman, in efforts to stop segregation in 1955. Little Rock 9- (1957) nine colored students who enrolled in a white school after the court ruling in the Brown V. The Board of Education of 1954. Martin Luther King Jr.- (1929-1968) Inspired the American Civil Rights movement to achieve equality, end racial discrimination, and stop segregation. He organized the 1963 March on Washington. Abraham Lincoln The Little Rock 9 Sylvia Mendez Rosa Parks Dr. Martin Luther King Jr .

Inspirational Movements The 1964 Civil Rights Act was signed into Public Law 82-352 forbade discrimination based on race, sex, gender, and national origin. The Morrill Act of 1862 and the re-signed in 1890. was implemented to educate the people about its surroundings in agriculture, home economics, mechanical arts, and other practical traits. The Morrill Act of 1862 did not allow the admissions of African Americans (University of Nebraska, 2017). The act was rewritten in 1890 to include African Americans. The Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965 was created to provide resources though financial aid to afford college through federal grants. Today students see this act through the creation of the Pell Grant, work-study program, and student loan programs (AAUW, 2015). The Title IX education amendments were made into law in 1972 (history.com, 2021). In 1988 the House of Representatives and the Senate joined forces to override President Reagan's veto S.557, Known as Civil Rights Restoration Act. The bill enabled Title IX (History, Art & Archives, n.d.). Title VII ensured that all employers, schools, and institutions do not discriminate based on culture, sex, religion, race, and national origin (history.com editors, 2010).

Change Agents starts with a leader who has the courage to face the unknown risking everything to create a change in the environment. A change agent will support those under them and motivate them to do more and to push for success. Change agents create movements, supports change, and engages positivity. Diversity has a history and along with that comes the people who were the change agents for the betterment of our country and society. If you believe in change, you can make a difference.
