Introduction ‘The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say, “Thank you”. In between, the leader is a servant.’ — Max DePre ‘No institution can possibly survive, it needs supermen to manage it-- Peter Drucker Peter Drucker famously stated that "management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.
leadership Good leadership is not so much about who you are as what you do and how you do it. Anyone capable of managing a business is also capable of developing basic leadership skills. Leadership is the process of influencing behavior towards accomplishment of goal in a given situation. Leadership style is the pattern of behavior that a leader adopt to influence their subordinates.
ELEMENTS OF GOOD BUSINESS LEADERSHIP FOCUS ON PEOPLE Leaders lead people. a leader will empower them and help them to realize their own potential within the organization. As Jack Welch famously said, ‘Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.’ VISION To lead, you have to know where you are going; and to know where you are going you have to look ahead. Leadership means seeing future potential in the present and anticipating how it might unfold.
KEEPING AN EYE ON THE BIG PICTURE Keeping an eye on the big picture and adjusting your plans and activities accordingly is an important part of leadership. It is all too easy when running a business to be so focused on your own operation that you do not see what is going on around you. SETTING THE DIRECTION The art of leadership is not just having a vision of where you want to be in the future, but also understanding how to get there from where you are now. In other words, leadership is about understanding and giving effective directions.
RISK MANAGEMENT Leaders often have to take risks - leading their organisation into unfamiliar territory – but the risks are always calculated and the decisions always informed. Wanting always to play safe and not risk making any mistakes does not sit comfortably with good leadership. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION However great a vision we might have, it is worth very little if we cannot effectively communicate it to others. Taking the time and trouble to share your vision and your values, allowing discussion of big ideas, and giving people an opportunity to adopt the vision as if it were their own are all essential qualities of good leadership.
TEAM BUILDING Another essential function of leadership is encouraging team spirit. In the same way individual employees working alone, however motivated they might be, are nowhere as effective as when they work as a team. INSPIRATION Finally, the most important quality of a leader is their ability to inspire and motivate others. Leading by example is the most effective way to convey integrity, commitment, and vision – and to transmit enthusiasm and loyalty to others
Qualities of BUSINESS Leaders Top leaders are visionaries - they see the big picture. In fact, their eyes are always on the big picture. They don’t get caught up in micro thinking, but recognize what needs to be done today in light of tomorrow. Top leaders are strong communicators - whether addressing an audience or writing a proposal, effective leaders know how to get their message across. They are able to see beyond all the clutter and communicate with confidence, conviction and clarity.
Top leaders inspire others with their dreams - they see things as they really are, but they also envision positive change. They deal with what is real, but they also dream and inspire hope at the same time. Martin Luther King is an example of one of the great leaders of the modern era. His “I have a Dream” speech goes down as one of the most inspiring and change-affecting events in American history. Dr. King acknowledged the present reality, but looked beyond that and led people to change.
Top leaders aren’t control freaks - contrary to a more traditional view, top leaders are able to let go of the “doing” and simply lead and encourage others. They don’t have to do all the work because they surround themselves with people who are competent and capable. Then, they let go and allow others to do their jobs.
Top leaders accept responsibility - they know the buck stops with them, and they never make excuses. They don’t blame others, or get resentful when others don’t do their jobs adequately. They figure out how to improve what went wrong, and move forward. Ultimately, they know they are responsible for what happens with the members of their team and the project at hand. Top leaders model leadership - they are genuine, and what you see is what you get. They don’t expect others to do anything they wouldn’t do themselves, and live and work with integrity and high standards. They lead from the front, knowing others are watching and exemplify the qualities and behaviors they want to see from others.
McClelland theory Top leaders are charismatic - they have a strong ability to create rapport, and are able to generate enthusiasm and trust very quickly. They have a personality and style that draws people to them. Top leaders use their charisma for the genuine purpose of developing relationships and furthering goals, but not to manipulate others. Top leaders show determination - they follow through. They don’t give up. They keep walking when the snow is knee-deep. They inspire others to do the same because they are demonstrating perseverance. They maintain a positive attitude in spite of difficult circumstances.
Top leaders are passionate - passion distinguishes top leaders from average leaders. Top leaders have an extremely high level of belief in what they are doing and are able to communicate that to others in the organization. Their passion has usually taken them to their leadership position, and is their driving force in everything they do.
