Structuring and Writing a Research Proposal Lecture 13 – Research Methodology

What is a Research Proposal? A research proposal is a detailed plan for a research project. It communicates what you want to study, why it's important, and how you plan to carry it out.

Importance of a Research Proposal Clarifies thinking, demonstrates significance, helps gain approval/funding, and enables feedback before starting.

Basic Structure of a Proposal 1. Title 2. Introduction & Background 3. Problem Statement 4. Objectives 5. Literature Review 6. Methodology 7. Timeline 8. Expected Outcomes 9. Budget 10. References

Title and Introduction Title should be concise and focused. Introduction should provide background, relevance, and a clear research gap.

Problem Statement Defines the issue the research will address. Must be specific, researchable, and justified with data or context.

Objectives and Research Questions State the broad aim (general objective) and specific, measurable goals. Include research questions or hypotheses.

Literature Review Summarize and synthesize previous work. Identify gaps or contradictions. Use recent and peer-reviewed sources.

Methodology Explain research design, sample, instruments, and data analysis methods. Should be replicable and justified.

Timeline and Budget Include a Gantt chart-style schedule. Budget should list resources: equipment, travel, software, etc.

Expected Outcomes Describe potential findings and their significance. Who will benefit and how? Practical applications?

References Use proper academic style (APA, MLA, etc.). Be consistent and include only cited sources.

Common Mistakes to Avoid Unclear objectives, vague methodology, lack of citations, unethical conduct, overly broad topics.

Class Activity Write a draft research title, one research question, and a one-sentence problem statement.

Summary A proposal is a roadmap for your research. Structure, clarity, ethics, and justification are key. Assignment: 1-page mini proposal.
