Networking Devices

What is Networking Devices?
Networking devices are components used to
connect computers or other electronic devices
together so that they can share files or
resources.

Different Networking Devices:
•Router
•Hub
•Switches
•Bridges
•Gateways
•Network interface card

•Routers perform the "traffic directing" functions on
theInternet.
•Routers operate at thenetwork layerof theOSI
model
•efficiently route information betweenLocal Area
Networks.
Router

Hub
•A hub is a common connection point fordevicesin
anetwork.
•works at physical layer and hence connect networking
devices physically together.
•contains multipleports.
•When apacketarrives at one port, it is copied to the
other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all
packets.

Switches
•A switch is an intelligent device that works in the
data link layer.
•It is linkage points of an Ethernet network.
•The term intelligent refers to the decision making
capacity of the Switch.
•Hub works by sending the data to all the ports on
the device whereas aswitchtransfers it only to that
port which is connected to the destination device.

Bridges
•Bridges Builds the connection with the other
bridge networks which use the same protocol.
•It operate at thedata link layer of theOSI
model

Gateways
•Gateway is a device which is used to connect
multiple networks.
•Agatewayis anetworkpoint that acts as an
entrance to another network.
•It allows the computer programs, either on the
same computer or on different computers to share
information across the network through protocols.
•A router is also a gateway, since it interprets data
from one network protocol to another.

Network interface card
•NIC hardware devices that connect a computer
with the network.
•They are responsible for developing a physical
connection between the network and the
computer.
•Computer data is translated into electrical signals
send to the network via Network Interface Cards.
•It allows users to connect to each other either by
using cables or wirelessly.
