TheetiologyofSjögren’ssyndromeisunknown.
Sjögrensyndromeisthoughttoresultfromacombinationofgenetic
susceptibilityandenvironmentalfactors;however,noassociationsbetween
specificgeneticchangesandthedevelopmentofSjögrensyndromehave
beenconfirmed.
Geneticstudieshaveidentifiedanassociation withHLAhaplotypesand
susceptibilitygenesincytokine genesand genesinvolved inB-cell
differentiation.
Variouscausesofthisdiseasehavebeensuggested:genetic,hormonal,
infectiousandimmunologic, amongothers.Itmay beacombinationof
factors,both extrinsicand intrinsic,playaroleintheetiologyofthis
condition.
Mostauthoritiesconsider analteredimmunologicresponse tobethemain
intrinsicfactorwhichisresponsibleforthedisease.Laboratoryfindings
supporttheautoimmuneetiologicrole.

themouthandeyesasaresultofhypofunctionof
thesalivaryandlacrimalglands.
●Dryeyesmayleadto
itching,burningsensation,
feelingofsandintheeyes,
redness,blurredvisionor
intolerancetobrightor
fluorescentlight.

in painful,burningsensationsofthe oralmucosa,sensitiveto
spicesandheat,alteredtaste,difficultyinspeakingand
swallowing,halitosis,dentalcaries,poorretention ofdenture

stickingtogether.
