INTRODUCTION The word lecture comes from the Latin word “ lectus ” which means to read . From 16 th centuary onwards the word lecture was used to describe oral instruction given by a teacher in front of an audience of learners.

The lecture is an excellent method for presenting information to a large number of persons in a short period of time.

DEFINITION According to OXFORD DICTIONARY LECTURE is defined as “a discourse (a long & serious discussion in speech or writing) given by an audience on a given subject, usually for the purpose of instruction”.

Lecture method is a teaching method which the presenter or the teacher teaches orally to a group of class participants, lectures are used to convey critical information, theories and enquiries.

PURPOSE Stimulate thinking in students Develop concentration in students Achieve a very high order of cognitive objectives Influence learners to inculcate the habits of listening and learning

COMPONENTS An effective lecture is composed of three components, Introduction Body Conclusion

1. The Introduction:- The introduction usually is the first three to five minutes of the lecture. The main purpose is to provide a framework for students learning, providing the structure for the lecture’s content information. It is also necessary to gain student’s attention.

It shoud do the following: Establish a Relationship with the audience Gain attention and foster motivation Prompt awareness of relevant pre-existing knowledge Announce lecture topic as title

2. The Body:- The body of the lecture covers the content in an organized way

3. The Conclusion:- The most frequently neglected component of the lecture Try to do following in your lecture conclusion: - Repeat and emphasize main points - Encourage questions from students - Relate content to previous and subsequent topics

ESSENTIALS OF A GOOD LECTURE

Manage lecture in time Avoid annoying mannerisms Proper use of body language Topic based on need & interest Lecture with respectivity of students Clarify concepts with examples Tailor, speech & writing A GOOD LECTURE

ADVANTAGES

It provides current information from many sources It provides a summary or synthesis of information from different sources Teaching activities are dominated by the teacher This method develops concentration in students It is an economical teaching strategy

DISADVANTAGES It is not conductive to meeting student’s individual needs It does not promote independent learning It is difficult to adapt to individual learning differences It lends little emphasis on problem solving, decision making, analytical thinking or transfer of learning
