Professional Ethics

What is Engineering Background Why Professional Ethics 2

Engineering has contributed to the life of human beings Provides many benefits and enables them to enjoy life Engineers are overwhelmed to technical creativity rather than helping people. 3

Engineers develop and apply complex technology that can be used extensively and rapidly Imbalances in the use of skills and resources should be the concern of engineers Therefore, ‘professional ethics’ developed as a new discipline which has practical implications Engineers have to make ethical decisions in their practical life 4

Ethics in different Professions All persons, whether in business, government, educational institutes, or any other professions are concerned with ethics Encyclopedia of Social Sciences defines ethics as “the organization or criticism of conduct in terms of notions like, good, right or welfare 5

Contd … Ethics is the secular and critical manner of taking account of the rationalizing process in human conduct Its temper is non-mystical, and its orientation is social rather than theological 6

Ethics in Engineering Why Ethics is important in engineering? Engineers has responsibility to act in public interest Deals with the problem in using technology Ethics impact directly on the engineering reputation Must comply with engineering code of ethics 7

Contd … Engineering Ethics is: The study of moral issues and decisions confronting individuals and organizations involved in engineering The study of related questions about moral ideals , character, policies and relationships of people and organizations involved in technological activity 8

Ethics choices are not easy Rushworth Kidder, president of Institute for Global Ethics, wrote the really tough choices ……. Involve truth versus loyalty, individual versus community, short term versus long term and justice versus mercy 9

Professional Ethics Professional Ethics is partly comprised of what a professional should or should not do in the work-place If a professional is to have ethics then that person needs to adopt that conduct in all of his dealings Another aspect is the enhancement of the profession and the industry within which the professional works 10

Professional ethics is a discipline aimed at : - Understanding the moral values that ought to guide engineering profession or practice Resolving moral issue in engineering Justifying the moral judgment in engineering 11

SCOPE Ethics of the workplace which involves the co-workers and employees in an organization Ethics related to the product or work which involves transportation, warehousing, the safety of the end product and the environment outside the factory 12

APPROACH MICRO ETHICS It deals with decisions and problems of individuals , professionals and companies MACRO ETHICS It deals with the societal problems e.g. Global issues, responsibilities of groups as professionals etc 13

Managing the unknown In many situations engineers are ignorant about the consequences of their design and products Thoroughly test your design Apply creativity to foresee the consequences 14

Engineering Code of Ethics A code is statement of policies, rules and principles Practice by professionals Guide not only business but individual’s behaviour in organization 15
