Slide Content

Lesson 1.1. -NATURE AND
PRINCIPES OF DEVELOPMENT
PrEd123n –Child and Adolescent Learners and Learning Principles

Learning Outcomes
•Discuss basic terms and concepts in child and
adolescent development
•Explain life-span perspectives/principles and
issues of human development
•Construct a concrete definition of development
and its implications

Important Terms
Growth–physical changes that occur
from conception to maturity
Development –qualitative, increase
in complexity of function and skill
progression
Maturation–the biological unfolding
of an individual according to one’s
genes

Important Terms
Learning–the process through which
experience brings about relatively
permanent change in thoughts or behavior
Environment–all external physical and
social conditions and events
Child–a person below 18 years of age, or
over 18 years of age but is unable to take
care of him/herself due to certain conditions

Approaches to Human Development
Life-span approachTraditional approach
extensive changes from
childhood to
adolescence, stability in
adulthood, decline in old
age
development takes place
from conception to death

Principles of Development
1.Development is lifelong.
2.Development is plastic.
Plasticity–potential for
change
3. Development is
multidimensional.
Physical Cognitive
Socioemotional

Principles of Development
4. Development is
relatively orderly.
5. Development takes
place gradually.
6. Development involves
both gain and loss.

7. Development is contextual.
8. Development is multiply
influenced.
9. Development involves
growth, maintenance, and
regulation.
10. Understanding
development requires multiple
disciplines.
Society
Culture

Basic Issues in Human
Development
1.Nature and Nurture –Which has
more significant influence on
human development?
2.Assumptions on Human Nature
–Are children inherently good or
bad?

Basic Issues in Human
Development
3. Activity vs. Passivity–Are children
curious, active creatures or they are
passive beings who are largely products
of influences beyond their control?
4. Stability vs. Change–Are we what
our first experiences have made us or do
we become someone different from who
we once were?

Basic Issues in Human
Development
5. Continuity vs. Discontinuity–
Does development involve gradual,
cumulative change (continuity) or
distinct changes (discontinuity)?
6. Universality vs. Context-
Specific –Are developmental
changes common to everyone or
different from person to person?
