Going Deeper Underground: Inside the Earth Learning Objective: To describe the structure of the Earth and to write diary entry on your journey to the centre of the earth Starter: What do you think the world is made up of?
STARTER Humans have only been able to travel just 7.6km below the surface of the Earth. Why do you think this is?
Task: Create at least 4 full sentences summarising this video!
If you were to cut the Earth in half, you would see it is made up of lots of layers. Going deeper underground… Crust Inner core Outer core Mantle
Cross-section of the Earth: Going deeper underground…
Your task is to create a detailed diagram of the Earth. You will need to split up each layer of the Earth and include annotations of each layer’s main characteristics. Going deeper underground… Also include how we know what it is like inside the Earth. Inner core Outer core Mantle Crust
The structure the earth The outside of the planet earth is called the crust. It is solid rock varying in thickness (0-60km). There are two types; oceanic and continental The crust is split into large pieces called plates. The Mantle is the widest section (2900km) made of thick molten rocks called magma The outer core is liquid nickel and iron. with high pressure and temperature The inner core is a solid nickel and iron. very high pressure and a temperature over 5500°c
Millions of years ago… The continents used to be joined together in a supercontinent called Pangea. But over time they have been moving in different directions due to continental drift.
Watch the following video to discover the ideas behind Pangaea. What do you think the world might look like 100 million years from now? Justify your answer.
The Earth’s crust is cracked, like an eggshell, into tectonic plates. Some plates cover whole continents or oceans, but others are much smaller.

Your Journey to the Centre of the Earth Task: Produce a piece of creative writing about your journey to the centre of the Earth. Your account should include : Information about each layer of the Earth. What do you see? How has the temperature changed? What is the physical state of each layer e.g. solid, liquid? Changes in thickness of the layers – distance to travel What are your thoughts and feelings at each stage?
My journey to the centre of the earth How will you travel to the centre of the earth? What will you need to take with you? Where will you begin your journey? What is the first layer like? What is the next layer how is it different? Can you describe the third layer? What is the centre of the earth like? How will you leave the centre of the earth?
How did you do? Positive comment Positive comment Target for improvement
