2. DEFINITION OF SERVICE It is defined as the act of helping or providing assistance for another person or a group of people. (Service, 2020) NSTP embraces the concept of service learning.

3. WHAT IS NSTP? National Service Training Program

4. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, students are expected to: define service; enumerate and explain the concepts related to NSTP as specified in RA 9163; formulate your own slogan on service.

6. National service programs are a global phenomenon. Contrary to the claims of vocal opponents to compulsory service, the nation that recognizes civic duty , through one form of mandatory service or another, span the political, economic, and cultural spectrum.

7. In keeping with the concept of national service , the 1987 Philippine Constitution enshrined in its Declaration of Principles that the Filipinos are duty-bound to protect the country and, as such, they may subject to undergo service programs. Art. II. Sec. 4, 1987 Constitution “The prime duty of the Government is to serve and protect the people. The Government may call upon the people to defend the state, and in fulfillment thereof, all citizens may be required, under conditions provided by law, to render personal military or civil service.”

8. Along with this line of thought, the same Constitution, under State Policies, prescribes the involvement of the young generation in the community affairs in order to secure the nation. Art. II. Sec. 13 “The State recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building and shall promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. It shall inculcate in the youth patriotism and nationalism and encourage their involvement in public and civic affairs.”

9. REPUBLIC ACT 9163 (RA 9163) Also known as NSTP Act of 2001 . This serves as the legal basis for the implementation of NSTP which aims to educate young students about nationalism and patriotism. It aspires to increase the students’ sense of social awareness, other-centeredness and servant leadership.

10. THREE COMPONENTS OF NSTP RESERVE OFFICERS’ TRAINING CORPS (ROTC) puts emphasis on grooming students for national defense preparedness .

11. THREE COMPONENTS OF NSTP LITERACY TRAINING SERVICE (LTS) focuses on improving the literacy and numeracy skills of children in schools and of out-of-school youth.

12. THREE COMPONENTS OF NSTP CIVIC WELFARE TRAINING SERVICE (CWTS) centers on community work that contributes to the well-being of community members.

13. Aside from the three program components, RA 9163 recommends the following topics to be discussed in the NSTP 1: CITIZENSHIP TRAINING: discussed the rights, duties and responsibilities of Filipino citizens. DRUG EDUCATION: explores the harmful effects of dangerous drugs and ways to prevent drug abuse and addiction.

14. DISASTER RISK REDUCTION AND MANAGEMENT: highlights various individual and community preparedness actions to mitigate the harmful effects of disasters. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION: examines different environmental issues and proactive ways to take care of the environment. NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS: enumerates and examines various internal and external issues and concerns related to the protection of the security of the state.

15. PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF NSTP: To highlight the role of the youth in building a strong Republic, invoking gender equality and development through the inclusion of female students in national service training. To develop the youth become civic or military leaders and volunteers through a modified, restructured and reinforced training package who could be called upon by the nation.

16. National service training is a form of youth training, affords its student-trainees the opportunity to develop practical and functional knowledge as well as life skill, especially problem-solving in daily life and most especially of good citizenship , ethics of service and sense of patriotism as well as nationalism .
