WORLD LITERATURE

LITERATURE Mirror of the society Reflects societal norms, culture, tradition, experiences and etc.

LITERATURE - a window into the human experience, and by reading the literature of other world cultures, we can not only understand their experiences and worldviews better, but perhaps understand ourselves better as well.

What is World Literature? “ A crucial feature of world literature is that it resolves always into variety of worlds.” – David Damrosch

WORLD LITERATURE These different worlds vary by era, region, and cultural prestige. Africa Middle East/West Asia China

3 Possible Features of World Literature They are classic. They are masterpieces. They are windows to the world.

3 Possible Features of World Literature They are classic. The “classics” is a work of transcendent even foundational cultural force.

3 Possible Features of World Literature They are masterpieces. The “masterpiece” on the other hand, can be a recent or even contemporary work and need not to have any foundational cultural force.

3 Possible Features of World Literature They are windows to the world. Shows nascent interest in works that could serve as “windows into foreign worlds,” whether or not these works could be constructed as masterpieces and regardless of whether these differing worlds had any visible links to each other at all.

MASTERPIECE - refers to a creation that has given much critical praise - considered the greatest work of a person’s career or to a work of outstanding creativity, skill, or workmanship.

MASTERPIECE On literature, it is the highest recognition that a literary work can receive. It possesses universality, artistry, permanence and uniqueness.
