About This Presentation

Overview of Lesson 1: The Nature of Mathematics
Definition and Scope of Mathematics:
Mathematics is described as a universal language that helps us understand and communicate concepts and rules using symbols, signs, proofs, and conventions.
It encompasses various fields such as algebra, geometry, ca...

WORLD
Prayer Before Class

Lesson 1: Nature of Mathematics
What is Mathematics?
Mathematics is the study of pattern and structure. It is
fundamental to the physical and biological sciences,
engineering, and information technology, to economics
and increasingly to the social sciences.
Mathematics is a tool to quantify, organize and control
our world, predict phenomena and make life easier for
us.
Mathematics is both a tool and a language used to
describe and understand the world, enabling the analysis
and solution of complex problems in various disciplines.

Lesson 1: Nature of Mathematics
Where is Mathematics?
Many patterns and occurrences exists
in nature, in our world. It is present in
virtually every aspect of our lives.
Here are some contexts where
mathematics can be found:

Lesson 1: Nature of Mathematics
What role does Mathematics Play in our World?
Provides the foundation for science and technology
Enabling engineering and economic modelling
Supports medical research and daily activities
Underlies digital technologies
Informs environmental science, and influences art,
architecture and music
Helps analyze data, make predictions, solve complex
problems, and understand patterns in nature and society.
Essential for logical reasoning, decision-making, and
advancing human knowledge across various fields

PATTERNS IN NATURE
-are visible regularities of form found in
the natural world.
Symmetries, Fractals, Spirals, Meanders, Waves,
Foams, Tessellations, Cracks, and Stripes)

SYMMETRY
-means agreement in dimension, due to proportion and arrangement.
In Mathematics, “symmetry” means that an object is invariant to any
of various transformations including reflection, rotating, or scaling.

SPIRAL
-is a curve which emanates from a point, moving farther way as it
revolves around the point.

MEANDER
-is one of a series of regular sinuous curves, bends, loops, turns, or
winding in the channel of a river, stream, or other water course.

WAVE
-is a disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space with
little or no associated mass transport.

FOAM
-is a substance formed by trapping pockets of gas in a liquid or solid.

TESSELATION
-is a tilling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles
with no overlaps and no gaps.

CRACKS
-is the separation of an object or materials into two or more pieces
under the action of stress.

STRIPES
-are made by a series of bands or strips, often of the same width or
color along the length.

FRACTALS
-is a never-ending pattern, infinitely complex patterns that are self-
similar across different scales. They are created by repeating the
process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop.
