Earth Science
•Origin & Structure of the Earth
–Universe & The Solar System
–Earth & Earth Systems
•Earth Materials & Processes
–Minerals & Rocks
–Exogenic Processes
–Endogenic Processes
–Deformation of Crust
–History of the Earth
Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
•describe the different hypothesis explaining the origin of the
universe;
•explain what the universe is composed of;
•illustrate the different hypothesis on the origin of the universe;
•reflect on the significance of understanding one’s origin; and
•cooperate in group activities (display teamwork).

THEORIES BEHIND THE
ORIGIN OF THE
UNIVERSE
Activity 1
4 Pics 1 Paragraph
1930 Edwin Hubble
CREATIONIST THEORY
God created the
Universe.
Proof? Its in the
Bible.
OSCILLATING UNIVERSE THEORY
•George Gamow
•Expansion will
stop, return to its
original form then
another Big Bang
will occur.
•Big Bang to Big
Crunch
STEADY STATE THEORY
•The Universe has
always been the
same since the
beginning and it
remain that way
forever!
BIG BANG THEORY
•Fr. Edouard
Lemaitre
•Edwin Hubble
•No matter but
PURE energy
called
SINGULARITY
have inflated and
expanded
continuously.
Our expanding Universe!
•Our cosmos is still
expanding in a
doppler red shift or
cosmological red
shift
•In big bang, there
was no space for
the explosion to go
into − space itself is
explodig.
Individual Activity
illustrate and briefly discuss
the hypothesis on the origin
of the universe. Volunteers
will be asked to present
their output.
•If you are to formulate your own
theory about the origin of the
universe, how would you explain
it? What would you call it?
The Big Word – UNIVERSE
•Write 3 things that you learned,
•2 things that you are not sure about/needs
more explanation, and
•1 question about the topic or related to the
topic.
Quiz
Quiz
How can you prove that the universe is expanding?
•½ Crosswise sheet of paper. Answer the
questions below.
1.What are the different theories regarding
the Origin of the Universe? Describe each.
2.How can you prove that the universe is
expanding using the REDSHIFT?
Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
•describe the different hypothesis explaining the origin of the
universe;
•explain what the universe is composed of;
•illustrate the different hypothesis on the origin of the universe;
•reflect on the significance of understanding one’s origin; and
•cooperate in group activities (display teamwork).
Due on Friday!
•Prepare your Portfolio or ePortfolio in the
form of your choice (PDF, Word, PPT,
Video, etc). On your Portfolio or ePortfolio,
create a gallery showing the different
hypothesis on the origin of the universe.
Briefly discuss each hypothesis. Your
output will be graded primarily on the
basis of its informativeness and creativity.
Refer to the rubric to be given by the
teacher for the full criteria.
