Biological Factors:
-Heredity
-Infection
-Brain defects or injury
-Misuse of substances
-Prenatal damage
-Exposure to toxins

Heredity (genetics)
Mental illness can be
inherited from a family
member.

Infection
Some infections are linked to
brain damage and delayed
development.

Brain defects or Injury
Abnormalities in the brain or
damage caused by head
injuries are possible causes of
mental disorders.

Misuse of substances
The use of drugs, alcohol, and
similar substances have been
linked to anxiety, depression,
and paranoia.

Prenatal Damage
Some research suggest that
accidents such as trauma at
the time of birth may cause
the disruption of early fetal
brain development.

Exposure to toxins
Being exposed to toxins such
as lead may also cause mental
illness.

Poverty
Children who live in a poor
household are three times
more likely to suffer mental
illness than children in a well-
off household.

Psychological Factors:
-Traumatic experiences such as childhood abuse,
separation of parents, and post-traumatic stress
disorder.

-Experiencing discrimination or stigma (disgrace or
shame)

Social Health

-The ability to create meaningful personal
relationships with other people.
-A person is one who can form satisfying
interpersonal relationships with other
people.

-Ambivert

Do you feel comfortable in a big crowd or do you prefer to
be alone? If you are the former, then you are probably an
extrovert. If you are the latter, then you are likely an
introvert. However, if you have characteristics in-
between the two, you are probably ambivert.

-Is an outgoing individual or “people person.”
-Extroverts feel comfortable in a group, and
they like working with others.

-Is a reserved, reflective, and solitary person.
-Introverts prefer to be alone.
-They mingle with just a few people and only
when necessary.

-A person who can be both introvert and
extrovert.
-The personality of an ambivert is influenced
by the situation.

A socially healthy person has the following
characteristics:
-Participates in group or social activities but can do well
when alone;
-Can manage his or her behavior and can resolve conflict;
-Shows empathy and understanding; and
-Has a positive self-image and self-worth

-Take care of your body
-Learn how to deal with stress
-Get help when needed.

-Understand the value of your emotions.
-Identify your personal strength.
-Learn ways to cope with your feelings and
reactions.

family ties
