Language is a system . Communication is a context. It has rules to follow systematically arranged through words and sentences which birth out the need for communication. It is a meaningful exchange of information through verbal and nonverbal messages.

Why is there a need to study communication? 1. It is mutual exchange. 2. To be understood. 3. Key progress and advancement. 4. Societal interaction of words. 5. God-given gift to express our adoration to Him.

D. Ethics of Communication: Straight Talk and Nonviolent Communication

Seek to elicit the best in communications and interactions with other group member; Listen when others speak; Speak non-judgmentally; Speak from your own experience and perspective, expressing your own thoughts, needs, and feelings; Seek to understand others; Avoid speaking for others. Manage your own personal boundaries. Share only what you are comfortable sharing; Respect the personal boundaries of others. Avoid interrupting and side conversations. Make sure that everyone has time to speak.

E. Principles of Communication:

#1 - Clarity The message should be clear by using appropriate language and communication channels.

#2 - Conciseness The message should be brief. It should be devoid of trivial details that would hinder communication.

#3 - Completeness The message should be complete and accurate. Background information should be given to provide better context.

#4 - Organization Effective communication is usually planned in order to ensure systematic flow of ideas.

#5 - Empathy The sender of the message should be sensitive to the needs of the receiver.

#6 - Flexibility Effective communicators know how to adapt to the varying needs and expectations of their audience, and modify message to avoid misunderstanding.
