4. What is History? READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY He was a Greek  philosopher during the  Classical period  in  Ancient Greece . Taught by  Plato , he was the founder of the  Lyceum , the  Peripatetic school  of philosophy, and the  Aristotelian  tradition History meant a systematic account of a set of natural phenomena, whether or not chronological factoring was a factor in the account. In the course of time, however, the equivalent Latin word “ scientia ” (English, science) came to be used more regularly to designate non chronological systematic accounts of natural phenomena; and the word history was reserved usually for accounts of phenomena (especially human affairs) in chronological order. By its most common definition, the word history now means, “the past of mankind” . Aristotle 384–322 BC

READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY He was an  ancient Greek  historian who was born in  Halicarnassus  in the  Persian Empire  (modern-day  Bodrum ,  Turkey ) He is known for having written the book  The Histories  ( Greek : Ἱστορί αι  Historíai ), a detailed record of his "inquiry" (ἱστορία  historía ) on the origins of the  Greco-Persian Wars He is widely considered to have been the first writer to have treated historical subjects using a method of systematic investigation—specifically, by collecting his materials and then critically arranging them into an  historiographic  narrative. On account of this, he is often referred to as " The Father of History ," a title first conferred on him by the first-century BC  Roman  orator  Cicero . 484 – c. 425 BC

6. What is History? READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY Dr. de Viana has written at least six books on Philippine history, World War II and the history of the Marianas. He has authored a textbook for the Rizal Course and another textbook on Philippine History. As a co-author Dr. de Viana wrote 6 textbooks for Araling Panlipunan . The word “ Kasaysayan ” which we think the equivalent of the word history in Filipino has a deep meaning than its English equivalent. It is not merely a story but it also needs to be a “meaningful” story. Viana in his book “The Philippines: A Story of a Nation” divided the word “ Kasaysayan ” into three: ka -, saysay and –an “Its root word saysay , means “sense” or “meaning” “ yan ” , saysayan means the act of conveying words of importance or sense “ Ka ” has a very important connotation. It implies interaction connectiveness or relationship, of being a part of something, of being together, or doing something together.” Dr. Augusto de Viana UST

READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY He is a Filipino  historian ,  anthropologist , and  philosopher of history , best known in pioneering an emic perspective in Philippine history called Pantayong Pananaw (for-us-from-us perspective) , earning him the title “Father of New Philippine Historiography.” Defined kasaysayan through his Pantayong Pananaw as “ mga salaysay na may saysay sa isang grupo ng tao ” . 8. What is History? READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY He was a  Filipino   historian  known for being part of the  leftist  tradition of Philippine historiography. Apart from being a historian, Constantino was also engaged in foreign service, working for the Philippine Mission to the  United Nations  and the  Department of Foreign Affairs . “History is not merely a chronology of events; it is not the story of heroes and great men. Essentially, history consist of the people’s effort to attain a better life”. The common people possess the capacity to make history. History is not only comprised of the stories of the famous leaders but more importantly, the people as a whole. (March 10, 1919 – September 15, 1999) Renato Constantino
