BIBLE READING IN CLASS 5

BIBLE READING IN CLASS Matthew 25.41-46 41 - Then he will also say to those on his left: Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 - because I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; 43 - Being a foreigner, you did not welcome me; being naked, you did not clothe me; and being sick and in prison, you did not visit me. 6

44 - Then they will also answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not serve you? 45-Then he will answer them, saying: Truly I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. 46 - And these will go to eternal torment, but the righteous will go to eternal life. 7

INTRODUCTION Hell is one of the main subjects of the New Testament. The Lord Jesus taught more about Hell than Heaven in the pages of the Gospels. He also taught more about Hell than the apostle Paul. Therefore, in this lesson, we will study the biblical doctrine of Hell. We will situate the current resistance of many in relation to the doctrine, we will see the main words that translate “Hell” and we will show that denying this biblical doctrine means denying all biblical Christianity. 8

10 I – HUMAN THOUGHT ABOUT HELL

I – HUMAN THOUGHT ABOUT HELL 1. Philosophers and theologians with seared minds. Those who live in unbelief, dominated by the powers of darkness in this world, readily deny the reality of Hell. Humanist philosophers say that the biblical assertion of the existence of Hell is not compatible with modern ethical values. Modern and postmodern theologians deny the plenary inspiration of the Bible and, therefore, act to weaken the biblical doctrine about Hell, saying that it is a pagan thought that must be eradicated from the Bible. Others even admit that certain people will go to Hell, but for a temporary period. However, during this period, they will be purified and given a second chance to enter Heaven. 11

2. The teaching of Universalism. Another very common argument today is the false teaching that, in the end, all people will go to Heaven. For example, there would be no difference in the fate of a cold and cruel murderer for a believer who sought to have a holy life, fleeing of sin. The central idea of Universalism is that we are all children of God and, as He is a Being of love, He cannot condemn human beings to eternal punishment. 12

3. The apostolic warning . These false teachings reveal the fraud that many Christian intellectuals commit regarding biblical Christianity. What they do is transform God's truth into a lie, completely denying the biblical teaching regarding the biblical reality of Hell as clearly stated in the New Testament. It is not by chance that the apostle Paul wrote about these false teachers: they would have the appearance of godliness, but they would deny its effectiveness (2 Tim 3.5; cf. Matt 7.15); they would resist the truth (2 Tim 3.8; cf. Ex 7.11); they would apostatize from the faith and listen to the doctrine of demons, having their consciences seared (1 Tim 4:1). Today, we are vividly witnessing all the apostolic warnings regarding the false teachings and teachers of the last days. 13

Nowadays, many people think that the existence of Hell is not compatible with modern ethical values. SYNOPSIS I 14

15 II – HOW THE WORD HELL APPEARS IN THE BIBLE

16 II – HOW THE WORD HELL APPEARS IN THE BIBLE 1. In the Old Testament. The first word to be highlighted in the Old Testament is Sheol , “underworld of the dead”, “grave”, “hell”, “pit”. She brings the idea of the OT to “abode of the dead”, “place of no return”. This word appears 65 times in the OT: grave, place where the dead went (Job 17:13; Ps 16:10; Is 38:10); the faithful would be rescued from that place (Ps 16.9-11; 49.15); the wicked would not be rescued from there (Job 21:13; 24:19; Ps 9:17; 55:15). In the OT, the teaching about people's fates focused more on where people's bodies went, not on the fate of the soul after death.

17 There is, therefore, no clear text in the OT regarding the division of Sheol between a place of punishment and another of blessings. Thus, the Old Testament points to the New. In this Testament the doctrine of the eternal destiny of people after death is very clear. However, in general, the Hebrew word Sheol is also described as a place of punishment (Job 24:19).

18 2. In the New Testament. Three Greek words that appear in the New Testament were translated by the word “Hell” : hades (translates the Hebrew Sheol ); Tartar, Gehenna . The word hades means “place of punishment” (Mt 11.23; Lc 10.15; 16.23); it can also refer to the state of death that human beings will experience at the end of life (Mt 16.18; Acts 2.27,31; Rev 1.18). The word Tatar brings the idea of an abyss deeper than the grave , the dwelling of the wicked dead in which they suffer punishment for their evil deeds. The fallen angels are trapped in this place (2 Peter 2:4).

19 The word Gehenna , which appears 12 times in the New Testament, means “eternal punishment.” It is a word that derives from Hebrew terms linked to the Valley of Hinnom , to the south and east side of Jerusalem. In this place, the worshipers of Molech sacrificed babies by fire (2 Kings 16.3; 21.6). It is not by chance that the prophet Jeremiah referred to the Valley of Hinnom as one of judgment ( Jer 7.32; 19.6). In NT times it was a place where the city's rubbish was burned. This word received all the symbolism of “eternal punishment”, “eternal fire” and “final judgment” (Mt 23.33; 25.41,46) that does justice to the term Hell.

The word Hell appears in the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments. SYNOPSIS II 20

21 III – THE BIBLICAL DOCTRINE OF HELL

22 III – THE BIBLICAL DOCTRINE OF HELL 1. The biblical concept of Hell. In light of Matthew 25:41, Hell is a real place. The just and good God would never make a place like this for human beings created in His image and likeness (Gen 1:26), but rather for the Devil and his angels who rebelled against Him (2 Peter 2:4; Jude 12:6; Ap 12.7). However, when human beings despise God and His Word, placing themselves under the government of the god of this century, the Devil, they will also be sentenced and destined to the same place that Satan and his demons were (2 Cor 4. 4).

23 2. What does the doctrine teach? The reality of Hell is an entirely biblical teaching (Mt 10.28; 23.33; Mk 9.43; Lk 12.5), described as a place of sadness, shame, pain and extreme agony. This is because human beings will go to Hell as a whole: body and soul. Thus, according to the vast teaching of the New Testament, all people who despise Jesus as Lord and Savior of their lives will spend eternity totally separated from God, in the presence of the Devil and his demons (Mt 25.41).

24 3. The punishment will be eternal. Several passages in the New Testament denote the reality of Hell as a place of eternal punishment: unquenchable fire (Mt 3.12; Mk 9.43,48); burning furnace (Mt 13.42,50); darkness (Mt 8.12; 22.13); eternal fire (Mt 25.41); Lake of Fire (Rev 19.20; 20.10,14,15). Therefore, eternal punishment is configured as a penalty for those who rebelled against God and His Word. Therefore, this punishment is directly related to sin. All sinners who have not repented of their sins will be cast into the Lake of Fire, Hell, shortly after the Great White Throne judgment (Rev 20:11-15).

25 However, we need to note something important. The human being's journey to Hell is not a primary initiative of God, but a fruit of the human being's choice to deliberately live in rebellion against the Most High. The biblical teaching is clear and simple: those who rejected Christ will receive eternal punishment (Mt 25.46); Those who chose Christ will receive eternal life (John 5:26). Therefore, the choice of going to Heaven or Hell, whether to spend eternity with Christ or without Him, is personal.

The biblical doctrine of Hell proves its reality. SYNOPSIS III 26

27 CONCLUSION In light of the Bible, the possibility of spending eternity in a context of pain and suffering is real. Therefore, this reality must value more the great salvation that God has provided for our lives and, therefore, we must be firm in Jesus during our journey of faith, because without Christ, human beings will spend eternity far from God.

1. Explain at least one argument presented in the lesson that denies the biblical teaching about Hell. Modern and postmodern theologians deny the plenary inspiration of the Bible and, therefore, act to weaken the biblical doctrine about Hell, saying that it is a pagan thought that must be eradicated from the Bible. 2. What do false teachers claim when they distort the truths of biblical Christianity? What they do is transform God's truth into a lie, completely denying the biblical teaching regarding the biblical reality of Hell as clearly stated in the New Testament. Reviewing the content 28

3. Which word in the New Testament carries the symbolism of “eternal punishment”, “eternal fire” and “final judgment”? The word gehenna received all the symbolism of “eternal punishment”, “eternal fire” and “final judgment” (Mt 23.33; 25.41,46) that does justice to the term Hell. 4. Name at least three expressions that describe Hell. Furnace lit (Mt 13.42,50); eternal fire (Mt 25.41); Lake of Fire (Rev 19.20; 20.10,14,15). 5. Whose primary initiative is the human being's destiny in Hell? The human being's journey to Hell is not a primary initiative of God, but a fruit of the human being's choice to deliberately live in rebellion against the Most High. 29
