Pharmaceutical terminology. Names of medicinal substances, drugs. Frequency segments. Dosage forms. Structure of pharmaceutical terms. Teacher: Kakhorova Muhabbat

IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL: • Become familiar with the main groups of drugs • Learn the names of the main pharmaceutical forms • Learn some Latin and Greek component elements of drug names

INTRODUCTION TO THE PHARMACEUTICAL TERMINOLOGY The pharmaceutical terminology is the terminology used in Pharmacology (derived from the Greek “ pharmacon ” – “drug”). Pharmacology is the study of medicinal substances called pharmaceuticals. The International Drug Nomenclature amounts at the present time to 400,000 drugs.

Main pharmaceutical terms Pharmaceutical forms are divided into: ∗ liquids (solutions, infusions, decoctions, tinctures, extracts, mucilages , emulsions, suspensions, mixtures, liniments, etc ) ∗ semisolids (ointments, pastes, suppositories, plasters, etc ) ∗ solids (tablets, dragee , powders, etc ) ∗ other drug forms ( capsŭla , a ё rosōlum , Lamella ophthalmĭca , etc )

Most of chemical compounds and medicinal substances have two different names: Scientific or systematic name . 2. Trivial (lat. trivialiis - usual) name. The scientific name represents the chemical composition of medicinal substances. But with its complexity and difficulty, it is considered inconvenient to use in recipes, labels and pharmacy sales. Trivial names are easy to use because of their conciseness and simplicity. Names of medicinal products

Trivial names Scientific names   Analgin l-fenil-2,3-dimetil-4-metilamina-pirazolon-5-metansulfanat natriya Fenasetin l-etoksi-4-asetaminobenzoI trano-9,13-dimetil-7 Retinol (vitamin A) 1,1,5-trimetilsiklogeksen-5-il-6/nonatetrayen-7,9,11, 13-ol

MAIN PHARMACEUTICAL FORMS You should learn the main pharmaceutical forms as follows (in a dictionary form!):
