Materials that Absorb Water Lesson 2
If you spilt you drink, what sort of material would you use to mop it up?
Which absorb water and which object repels it?
Absorbs means to take something in such as water in a natural or gradual way Repels means to move away
What are the characteristics of materials that absorbs water best?
Absorb or Repel?
Do the following activity: Activity 2: Which Materials Absorb Water and Which Do Not?
Basin of water Dropper Tray Ping-Pong balls Cotton balls Sponges Paper Popsicle stick What you need Face towel Rag Tissue paper Wax paper Pebbles Plastic bag Copy of worksheet
What to do: Choose among your group who will act as organizer, leader and presenter. The organizer will get all the materials needed for the activity. The leader will select the first object, put it in a basin, together with the members, observes the material’s characteristics and write them in the space provided in the worksheet. Pour a tablespoon of water into the material. Observes what happens.
What to do: Lift up the material and squeeze. Let the water drip down on the basin. Did the water come out? Did the materials get wet? Is the material heavier when wet ? Record your observations. Do the same for each object. After observing all the materials, clean up the working table.
What characteristics did you observe from each of the materials before placing them in water? When you added water to the material, what happened to the water?/to the material? Guide Question/s:
When you lifted the materials and squeezed it, did water come out? Did the material get wet? Is the material heavier when wet? Why? Guide Question/s:
Materials That Absorb Water
Water soaks into many materials. These materials absorb water. They are called porous. Porous materials are materials having small holes that allow air or liquid to pass through.
There are a lot of materials that water will not soak in to. These materials repel water. These non- porous materials like plastic and rubber, does not allow water to pass through.
Remember: Porous materials are materials having small holes that allows air or liquid to pass through, example cotton and sponge Non- porous materials are materials that does not allow liquid and air to pass through it, examples plastic and rubber
Question and answer!
Why do you think some materials absorbed water and other did not? Why would some people prefer plastic bag than a paper bag? During rainy days, what kind of material are you going to use to prevent you from getting wet? Explain why.
