2. Israel A country in the Middles East, Israel’s financial capital is Tel Aviv . Its proclaimed capital, which is Jerusalem . Small country with a land area of 20,000 sq. km. Israel’s predominant religion is Jewish. Israel music is a combination of influences from its geographical area.

3. History Zionist immigrants brought in folk tunes from Russia in 1930s. Klezmer a musical tradition of Eastern European Jews. Middle eastern influences are seen in their instruments.

4. Israel character in music Israeli music uses minor and modal scales, is based on the old church tone. Has a guttural and throaty sound production w/ melismatic melodies, giving it a strong sound. Is usually connected to the conflicts and experienced in their nation. It also based on the beliefs of Israelis.

6. Sephardic Music Music style has Mediterranean or Spanish influences, thrives in the easter part of the country. Sephardim are Jews who have been exiled from the Iberian Peninsula. Music is generally vocal in nature.

7. Mizrahi Music Musical style blend of Turkish, Greek, and Arabic elements. Songs in Hebrew are sung in Arabic and accompanied by instruments. Music has melismatic and guttural styles of singing.

9. Oud A pear-shaped chordophone with 11-13 strings. Common instrument used in Middle East music.

10. Darbuka A single-headed, goblet shaped membranophone used in Middle East. Is played under the arm or between the legs. 3 kinds of sounds (1) “ duom ”- bass (2) “ tek ” - high pitch (3) “ pa ” - closed sound

11. IPO Israel Philharmonic Orchestra IPO was founded in 1936 by violinist Bronislaw Huberman and was composed of several musicians who were excluded from European orchestras. World war 2 orchestra played 140 times. It also made several recordings under Decca Records. IPO is said to have a sound like no other, described as warm, full bodied, and dark.
