Balanced & Unbalanced Forces LESSON 3

Identify the forces Gravitational Force Normal Force

Look at the Forces 5 N 5 N Equal Pushing Forces that are equal in magnitude(size) but opposite in direction are called Balanced Forces

Balanced Forces Do not cause a change in the object’s state of motion or rest . Rope remains unmoved because the rope is pulled with same forces at both ends. C ar's speed  stays the same  because the forward and backward forces are equal.

Look at the Forces 15 N 5 N Unequal Pushing Forces that are NOT equal and in opposite direction are called Unbalanced Forces

Unbalanced Forces Cause a change in the object’s state of motion or rest . The rope moves to the left because there is a greater force being applied on one side . The car will now speed up or accelerate because the forward and backward forces are no longer equal  .

What else to Know?

10N 10N 10N 10N Balanced At rest Balanced or Unbalanced? In Motion or At rest? Balanced At rest What else to Know? Balanced forces occur when two opposite forces results in no motion .

10N 8N 10N 10N 8N Balanced or Unbalanced? In Motion or At rest? Unbalanced In motion Same Direction Opposite Direction Unbalanced In motion What else to Know? Unbalanced forces occur when one force is stronger that the other which results in motion .

“ LET’S APPLY ”

Balanced or Unbalanced? A book sitting on a table. Balanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? An arm wrestle and you won. Unbalanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? A dog pulling a dog toy with you and it’s a tie. Balanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? A birdhouse hanging on a tree. Balanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? A tug-of-war with a team that fell down. Unbalanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? A hammer coming down on a nail. Unbalanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? A cup sitting in a saucer. Balanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? A tennis ball going over the net. Unbalanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? A boy pushing a boulder that won’t move. Balanced

Balanced or Unbalanced? A bowling ball sitting on an alley. Balanced

Give your own example of a day-to-day chore that shows balanced or unbalanced forces in it.
