CARTOON ANALYSIS

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE AND THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE Indigenous Peoples are distinct social and cultural groups that share collective ancestral ties to the lands and natural resources where they live, occupy or from which they have been displaced. The land and natural resources on which they depend are inextricably linked to their identities, cultures, livelihoods, as well as their physical and spiritual well-being.  Examples: The Igorot, the Lumad and the Mangyan

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE AND THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE The Igorot, the Lumad and the Mangyan The indigenous groups in the mountains of northern Luzon are collectively known as Igorot , while the groups on the southern island of Mindanao are collectively called Lumad . There are smaller groups collectively known as Mangyan in the central islands, and even smaller and scattered groups in the central islands and Luzon, including several groups of hunter-gatherers in transition.

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE AND THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE THE UPLAND TRIBAL GROUPS Ten upland tribal groups on Luzon have been identified: Ifugao, Bontoc, Kankanay , Ibaloi , Kalinga, Tinguian , Isneg , Gaddang , Ilongot and Negrito

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE Indigenous knowledge (IK) is the local knowledge – knowledge that is unique to a given culture or society . IK contrasts with the international knowledge system generated by universities, research institutions and private firms. (Warren 1991)

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE IK – also referred to as Traditional Knowledge or Traditional Ecological Knowledge  –  is a body of observations, oral and written knowledge, innovations, practices, and beliefs that promote sustainability and the responsible stewardship of cultural and natural resources through relationships between humans and their landscapes.

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE IK – It applies to phenomena across biological, physical, social, cultural, and spiritual systems. HOW?

INDIGENOUS MEDIA … owned , controlled and managed by indigenous peoples in order for them to develop and produce culturally appropriate information in the languages understood by the community by utilizing indigenous materials and resources, reflecting community needs and interests, visions and aspirations, and independent from vested interest groups. (Indigenous Media, Freedom of Expression and Right to Information: A S E A N S c e n a r i o, 2014)

INDIGENOUS MEDIA The media of communication owned and operated by the indigenous people which transmit information about rural development. It includes drama, storytelling, songs, folklore, poets, proverb, and puppetry theatre performers. It refers to the use of communication tools, pathways, and outlets by indigenous peoples for their own political and cultural purposes.

THE INTERNET Internet is a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. The following evaluation criteria will help you how to assess online resources. Currency. It is the timeliness of information. Relevance. It is the significance of the information that you need. Authority. It is the source of information. Accuracy. It is the closeness of the report to the actual data Purpose. The reason why it is created.

MASS MEDIA MASS MEDIA –reaches a large audience through written, spoken, or broadcast communication. A. Magazine – covers a large variety of articles and images of up-to-date information or opinion about a topic, event, or popular culture Examples of Magazine: National Geographic, , People Magazine B. Radio networks link radio stations that communicate information and messages. D. Television – like the Radio, television sends information and messages through the air, but instead of just sounds, television also sends visual images through channels for information, education, or entertainment purposes.

SKILLS IN DETERMINING THE RELIABILITY OF INFORMATION SKILLS IN DETERMINING THE RELIABILITY OF INFORMATION Check the Author Check the Date of Publication or of update Check for Citations – cite sources of info Check the Domain or owner of the site/page. .com – commercial .gov – government . edu – educational .org – nonprofit organization .mil – military

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN EVALUATING INFORMATION Reliability of information - Information is said to be reliable if it can be verified and evaluated. Others refer to the trustworthiness of the source in evaluating the reliability of the information. Accuracy of information - Accuracy refers to the closeness of the report to the actual data. Measurement of accuracy varies, depending on the type of information being evaluated. Forecasts are said to be accurate if the report is similar to the actual data. Financial information is considered accurate if the values are correct, properly classified, and presented   Value of information - Information is said to be of value if it aids the user in making or improving decisions.

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN EVALUATING INFORMATION Authority of the source - Much of the information we gather daily does not come from a primary source but is passed on through secondary sources such as writers, reporters, and the like. Sources with established expertise on the subject matter are considered as having sound authority on the subject.   Timeliness - Reliability, accuracy, and value of information may vary based on the time it was produced or acquired. While a piece of information may have been found accurate, reliable, and valuable during the time it was produced, it may become irrelevant and inaccurate over time (thus making it less valuable). Other information may be timeless, proven to be the same in reliability, accuracy, and value throughout history.

PERFORMANCE TASK: COOPERATIVE LEARNING INTERVIEW ACTIVITY Photo Credit: http://www.clg-mare-coignieres.ac-versailles.fr/index.php/enseignements/francais

PERFORMANCE TASK: COOPERATIVE LEARNING INTERVIEW ACTIVITY Divide the class into groups with 3- 4 members. Each group will interview two elders coming from two families. They will ask about cultural beliefs or practices in the community valued by the elders. Students need to identify and gather information to at least two cultural beliefs or practices.
