PRIESTHOOD IN THE OLD TESTAMENT SECOND QUARTER

Good Day! Welcome to the Second Quarter of this school year. It’s indeed God’s grace that we survive the previous quarter in this New Normal. Let us now continue to know Jesus so that He may be loved!

NoTE TAKING: Use bulleted arrangement to summarize the information you will get from the short video.

St. John Marie Vianney ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________

“ We put pride into everything like salt. We like to see that our good works are known. If our virtues are seen, we are pleased; if our faults are perceived, we are sad. I remark that in a great many people; if one says anything to them, it disturbs them, it annoys them. The saints were not like that – they were vexed if their virtues were known, and pleased that their imperfections should be seen.” -St. John Marie Vianney

Specific functions of the priests: To offer gifts Specific functions of the priests: To offer gifts 5 . A priest is a mediator or bridge between God and human beings. He offers sacrifices to God on behalf of all.

Jesus is the greatest high priest. Because He is both divine and human, Jesus is the perfect Mediator.

He is not only the perfect priest, holy and sinless but the perfect sacrifice .

Jesus continues His role as “priest”-“He is always able to save those who approach God through Him, since He lives forever to make intercession for them”(Hebrews 7:25)

He “brought his role as mediator to complete fulfilment when he offered himself on the Cross, thereby opening for us, once and for all, access to the Father’s house” CFC 1955

CLOSING PRAYER Loving Father, We humbly ask You to give us the courage to fulfill our mission according to Your Will. May we also respond to Your call. “Here I am! Send me.” And may the Holy Spirit inspire us to be like Your Son, Jesus Christ, in accomplishing our priestly task. Amen.

Session 2

OPENING PRAYER Student Prayer before class Heavenly Father, You hold each of us in your loving hands. Come fill our hearts, minds and bodies afresh with hope. Help us to cast our worries upon you, so that we can embrace our learning today. Bless us as we study and grow together. Come and anoint those who teach and tutor us to be bringers of insight and knowledge. Lord, watch over us all, keep us safe within your Almighty hand.

The priest in the Old Testament were chosen by God to perform the functions of offering sacrifices to atone for their own sins and the sins of the people. Their faith and commitment is strengthened by the people’s hope And helped them overcome their enslavement to sin

Answer page 60 of the book “Jesus Christ: Prophet, Priest, Savior, and Servant”. Complete the chart below. Read the Scriptural passage in the Old Testament then identify the priestly mission stated in the text .

Old Testament Text Priestly Mission Stated in the Text Lev. 10:8-11     Deuteronomy 21:5         Exodus 29: 38-42         Leviticus 13:15         Numbers 6:22-27

Unlike the priests in the Old Testament, we do not offer sacrifices to beg for God’s forgiveness. We do have our share of sacrifices and like the priests, we can transform them into pathways that lead to God.

What sacrifices will you undertake to show your commitment to love God and others? Express your answer through a symbol that represent your sacrifices then explain your symbol.

CLOSING PRAYER:

OPENING PRAYER:   Lord or God, you guide your people by the ministry of priests. Keep them faithful in obedient service to you that by their life and ministry So that they may bring glory in Christ. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God for ever and ever. Amen.

Everyone of us is called to remain faithful to our chosen vocation. We are called to serve the people of God in the ministry of preaching the Gospel and witnesses of God by serving and loving Him.   Priests need our prayer for them to remain faithful to their vocation.

Why say prayers for priests? Because, as St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests, once said: “After God, the priest is everything.” (He also once referred to the priest as “the steward of the good God, the distributor of His wealth.”)

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Almighty and Eternal God, look upon the Face of Thy Christ, and for love of Him Who is the eternal High-priest, have pity on Thy priests. Remember, O most compassionate God that they are but weak and frail human beings .

Stir up in them the grace of their vocation which is in them by the imposition of the Bishop's hands. Keep them close to Thee, lest the enemy prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation

O Jesus, I pray Thee for Thy faithful and fervent priests; for Thy unfaithful and tepid priests; for Thy priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for Thy tempted priests; for Thy lonely and desolate priests; for Thy young priests; for Thy aged priests; for Thy sick priests; for Thy dying priests; for the souls of Thy priests in Purgatory.

But above all I commend to Thee the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Thy Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed or helped me and encouraged me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way, particularly ________________________ (your priest’s name here).

O Jesus, keep them all close to Thy heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen. Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us; obtain for us many and holy priests. Amen.
