ESSAY STRUCTURE What is an essay? An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that gives the author's own argument. An essay is a series of paragraphs all in one main topic. 2. Parts of an essay - Introduction - Body - Conclusion
INTRODUCTION - Introduction = introductory paragraph 2 main parts: general statements (hook) and thesis statement (most important) + General statements: introduce the general topic of the essay. capture readers’ interest. + Thesis statement: state the specific topic may list subtopics of the main topic may indicate pattern of organization of the essay may indicate the writer’s position or point of view is usually the last sentence in the introduction.

INTRODUCTION - How to start your introduction? An effective introductory paragraph both informs and motivates- it lets readers know what your essay is about and it encourages them to keep reading possibly by 6 ways: State the thesis directly and briefly Tell a story Ask a question Give some facts and figures Quote a statement/idiom Refer to personal experiences

DEVELOPMENT Development = Body paragraphs Be the place to develop the topic and prove the points referred to in the thesis statement. Be supported by evidence: facts, data, examples… (Each paragraph follows the rules stated in HA10 .)
CONCLUSION Conclusion = concluding paragraph 3 purposes: + signal the end of the essay + remind readers the main points + leave readers with your final thoughts on the topic. - Techniques for memorable conclusion ( p.87 )
