OPENING PRAYER Lord, help us in our online studies today. Give us concentration so that may we listen, understand, learn and have peaceful mind and may we always remember that god is always with us

Good Morning! TTSFI ATS NC II Trainees

LESSON: Component Parts of Manual Steering System

ATS NC II Training Session Objectives: Identify the component parts of a manual steering system

LESSON: Component Parts of Manual Steering System

INTRODUCTION The steering system converts the rotation of the steering wheel into a swiveling movement of the road wheels in such a way that the steering-wheel rim turns a long way to move the road wheels a short way. The system allows a driver to use only light forces to steer a heavy car.

Component Parts of Manual Steering System

1. STEERING WHEEL It used by the driver to rotate the steering shaft that passes through the steering column.

2. STEERING COLUMN It is a housing and support the steering shaft by its rotation.

Component Parts of Steering Column

A. STEERING SHAFTS It connects to the steering gearbox through one or more universal joints or flexible steering coupler. It transfer the rotating motion from the steering wheel to the steering gearbox

B. UNIVERSAL JOINTS/FLEXIBLE STEERING COUPLER It provide the attachment between the steering shaft and the splined in input shaft of the steering gearbox.

3. STEERING GEARBOX It changes the rotary motion of the steering wheel into linear motion of the steering linkage

RACK AND PINION GEARBOX

RECIRCULATING BALL GEARBOX

Kinds of Steering Gearbox

Two Types of Steering System Rack and Pinion Steering Gearbox Recirculating Ball Steering Gearbox

1. RACK AND PINION STEERING GEARBOX It converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the wheels. And also it is common used by the light-duty vehicles.

Parts of Rack and Pinion Steering Gearbox

A . PINION It is connected to the steering column. As the driver turns the wheel, the forces are transferred to the pinion and it then causes the rack to move in either direction. This is achieved by having the pinion in constant mesh with the rack.

2. RACK It slides in the housing and is moved by the action of the meshed pinion into the teeth of the rack. It normally has an adjustable bush opposite the pinion to control their meshing, and a nylon bush at the other end.

2. RECIRCULATING BALL STEERING GEARBOX It is used on many trucks and SUVs today. The linkage that turns the wheels is slightly different than on a rack-and-pinion system. The recirculating-ball steering gear contains a worm gear.

Parts of Recirculating Ball Steering Gearbox

A. WORM GEAR It is a round -shaped threads that steel balls fit in and holds the ball nut.

B. BALL NUT It is a housing of recirculating ball bearing and it drives the sector gear back and forth.

C. SECTOR GEAR It rotates around its axis as its teeth move along the worm gear and moves the Pitman arm.

D. Recirculating ball bearing It act as a bearing to reduce the friction between the worm and ball nut . Ball guides on one side of the ball nut allow the balls to recirculate as the worm turns to screw the nut back and forth on the worm.

E. PITMAN ARM It transfer steering box motion to the steering linkage. The pitman arm is splined to the steering box sector (output) shaft. A large nut and lock washer secure the arm to its shaft.

4. STEERING LINKAGES It connects the linear motion of the steering gear to the steering arms.

Parts of Steering Linkages

A. CENTER LINK It is the steel bar that holds all other steering and connecting arms such as the idler arm, tie rod ends, and the rack end.

B. IDLER ARM It supports the end of the centre link on the passenger side of the car. The idler bolts to the car frame or subframe .

C. RUBBER BELLOW It is attached to the both end of rack and pinion housing. It protects the inner joints of rack end from dirt and contaminants. In addition, it retains the grease lubricant inside the rack and pinion housing.

D. RACK END It also known as Axial Joints, are used in rack-and-pinion steering systems. Providing a connection to the outer tie rod ends, a Rack End connects the steering rack to the tie rod, which connects to the wheel.

E. TIE-ROD END It is attached to the tie-rod shaft. These pivot as the rack is extended or retracted when the vehicle is negotiating turns. Some tie-rods and tie-rod ends are left or right hand threaded. This allows toe-in or toe-out to be adjusted to the manufacturer's specifications.

F. STEERING ARM It is the part of a vehicle's chassis that directs the input from the steering box to its components. It applies pressure from the steering box to the tie rods and results in the tires turning from left to right, or right to left.

G . STEERING KNUCKLE It is a part of the suspension system which links the wheel assembly and the steering components.

H. BALL JOINT It consist of a ball and socket similar to the hip joint of the human body. Ball joints of your front suspension provide pivoting movement between the steering knuckles and control arms to provide a safe, smooth ride and allow you to precisely control your vehicle.
