The anointing of the holy spirit “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” (Psalm 23:5b)
INTRODUCTION: In the Old Testament and before Jesus’ ascension, the manifestation of the Holy Spirit was sporadic , but Jesus promised to send His disciples what the Father had promised – the other Counselor, who would always be with them. We know that the God is triune – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Israelites knew the ministry of the God, the Father. When Jesus came to this world, for three and a half years people experienced the ministry of God, the Son. The ministry of God, the Holy Spirit, started at Pentecost and will culminate at the second coming of the Lord Jesus.
1. THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF JESUS. Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord said that Jesus’ ministry would be characterized by the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Isaiah 11:1-2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord
When Jesus start His ministry, He took the first step of obedience – baptism in the water, and was then filled with Holy Spirit. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:16-17)
Luke 4:18-19 New International Version 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” [ a ]
2. IMMERSED IN HIS SPIRIT Matthew 3:11 New International Version 11 “I baptize you with [ a ] water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with [ b ] the Holy Spirit and fire.
Joel 2:28-29 New International Version The Day of the Lord 28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
Acts 2:1-4 New International Version The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues [ a ] as the Spirit enabled them.
3. PREPARING OURSELVES TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT Acts 1:8 New International Version 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
HOW TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT? Laying on of hands and being filled with the Holy Spirit. Acts 19:6-7 New International Version 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues [ a ] and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
The deposit of the Spirit. Ephesians 1:13-14 New International Version 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit Luke 11:11-13 New International Version 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for [ a ] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
4. THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. He glorifies Jesus, revealing what is in His heart, to us. (John 16:14-15) The Holy Spirit guides us. (Jhon 16:13 He intercedes through us. (Romans 8:26) He clothe us with power. (Acts 1:8) He convicts concerning sin, righteousness and judgement. (John 16:8-11)
He guides us into all truth. (Jhon 16:13) He is responsible for giving divine gifts to the believers. (1 Cor. 12:7-11) The believer’s character is shown through the fruits of the Holy Spirit they posses. (Gal. 5:22-23)
CONCLUSION: The absence of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer is like having a body without spirit. Baptism in the Spirit immerses us in the presence of the Holy Spirit of God who floods our very being and gives life to our spirit. When we know the Holy Spirit, He start to work supernaturally in our life, helping us to guard our Christian life and to grow in our relationship with God and His Word. The Spirit of God is for every Christian.
