Pediculosis ( LICE AND NITS)
Types
●Capitis ( on the head )
●Body lice ( live in clothing )
●Pubic ( pubic hair) scratching of this area can
lead to other types infection.
characteristics
●Size : 2-3 mm
●Life span : 1M
●Produce 7-10 nits/day
●Nits ( 6-10 days ) hatch to nymph which
become an adult in 10 days.

Facts
●Nits after they hatch ( 10D) need access to a
host in 2d
●Lead to secondary skin infection such as
impetigo, enlargement of lymph nodes of neck
and scalp
●Most common symptom is scratching
How to diagnose
●People may be mistaken about the proper
diagnosis of lice especially when dandruff is
present.
●The key difference is that lice produce sticky
material that let them hard to be removed.
●Also lice usually stay close to the scalp
whereas dandruff fall off easily.
Tx
●Drug should be applied for the right duration, then
hair should be combed.
●Itching may persist for several days.
●Further use of drug can dry the hair and lead to
severe itching ( dermatitis due to irritation of the
skin )
●Vacuum furniture and wash everything with warm
water to avoid a second episode and to protect
other family members.
