Life Cycle of Fern By: Alyssa Denise R.Vicera

Word Box Give the definition of the following words: Fertilization Zygote Meiosis Embryo Mitosis

Alternation of Generations It is also known as alternation of phases or metagenesis . This is the cycle of reproduction in which a haploid gametophyte alternates with a diploid sporophyte.

Words To Remember

Sorus It is the cluster of sporangia.

Sporangium/Sporangia It is an enclosure in which spores are formed.

Gametophyte ( Prothallus ) It is the haploid, multicellular phase of plants and algae that undergo alternation of generations, with each of its cells containing only a single set of chromosomes .

Sporophyte It is the diploid form of plants that have alternation of generations. It develops from a zygote and produces asexual spores.

Rhizoids These are thread-like growths from the base or bottom of a plant, found mainly in lower groups such as algae, fungi , bryophytes and pteridophytes , that functions like roots of higher plants.

Antheridium It is a  haploid  structure or organ producing and containing male  gametes called sperm.

Archegonium It is a multicellular structure or organ of the gametophyte phase of certain  plants, producing and containing the ovum  or female gamete.
