Slide Content

Limestone Pavement “ an area of limestone which lies wholly or partly exposed on the surface of the ground and has been fissured by natural erosion ” ( Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Section 34 (6))

Around than 3000 hectares left in the UK Yorkshire Dales Lake District Elsewhere in Europe The Burren in Ireland High Alps Parts of former Yugoslavia Carboniferous Limestone Very Rare Where? JNCC , 2007

How? Limestone exposed in the last Ice Age Water action eroded the rock into paving blocks – ‘ clints ’ Complex pattern of crevices – ‘ grikes ’ Typically horizontal, or gently inclined

Who? Snails and Slugs Woodlice True bugs Flies Craneflies Ants, bees and wasps Birds

What? Vegetation that uses the structure of the rocks as a shelter from the extreme climate and/or grazing. Vegetation consisting of species that are poor competitors but can withstand little or no soil, low nutrients, poor shelter and drought.

Pressures Stone Removal for Commercial Purposes Intensive Grazing Inappropriate Land Management Agricultural Operations Forestry Operations Invasive Species

Management Prevention of stone removal or disturbance Limestone Pavement Orders (LPOs)
