To understand the formulation and preparation of gargles, specifically Iodine Gargle I.P., and the role of antiseptic agents in local action for oral and throat infections. 1. Practical Significance
2. Competency and Practical Skills Ability to prepare antiseptic gargle formulations. Skill in handling iodine and solubilizing agents. Understanding the role of excipients (solvents, stabilizers, flavoring agents). Knowledge of proper packaging and labeling.
Gargles are aqueous solutions intended for treating the mucous membranes of the throat and mouth by repeated gargling. They are not swallowed, only retained in the throat for some time to exert local antiseptic action. Example: Iodine Gargle (I.P.) β used as an antiseptic in pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and oral infections. Iodine: Active antiseptic agent. Potassium iodide: Solubilizing agent (forms KIβ, increases iodine solubility). Peppermint oil: Flavoring agent, masks iodine taste. Glycerin: Sweetener, soothing effect, co-solvent. Water: Vehicle. 3. Theory
Iodine β 0.14 g Potassium iodide β 0.30 g Peppermint oil β 0.10 mL Glycerin β 10 mL Purified water β q.s. to 100 mL 4. Formula
Dissolve potassium iodide in a portion of purified water. Add iodine to this solution to form potassium tri-iodide complex. Dissolve peppermint oil in glycerin. Mix both solutions together and make up volume with purified water. Filter if necessary and transfer into suitable containers. 5. Method of Preparation
Use amber-colored fluted bottles with tight screw caps. Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct light. 6. Packaging
βFor gargling only β Not to be swallowed.β Shake well before use. Dilute with warm water before use (usually 1 part gargle with 3 parts water). Store in a cool place. 7. Directions & Labeling
Do not swallow large amounts. Avoid use in iodine-sensitive patients. Use purified water only. Ensure complete dissolution of iodine in KI solution. 8. PRECAUTIONS
What is the role of potassium iodide in iodine gargle? Why is peppermint oil added in the formulation? Why should iodine gargle be stored in amber-colored bottles? State the importance of glycerin in gargles. Why should patients avoid swallowing iodine gargle? 09. Question Bank
