Listing the Research Hypothesis

Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1. Describe a research hypothesis. 2. Differentiate types of research hypothesis. 3. Develop a research hypothesis

What is It? A HYPOTHESIS tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variables. It is a specific and test able prediction on what you expect to happen with the variables in your study. An “educated guess” of what possibly the result would be of your research

Think About It SCENARIO: Mr. Cruz would like to test the effectiveness of fertilizer to the crop yield and growth of a rice plant. He identifies two types of fertilizers: organic (Fish Emulsion) and inorganic (Urea).

Think About It Guide Questions: 1. What is the experiment all about? 2. Which do you think of the fertilizers is effective?

POST IT! Categorize the type of question. DESCRIPTIVE INFERENTIAL Which do you think is the type of question that we can predict the possible relationship?

TYPES OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS According to Number of Variables SIMPLE COMPLEX Predicting a relationship between an independent variable and dependent Predicting the relationship of two or more independent variables to two or more dependent variables

EXAMPLES SIMPLE COMPLEX The higher th e poverty rate in society (one independent variable), the higher the number would be the out of school youth (one dependent variable). Eating more vegetables and fresh fruits (independent variables) leads to boost immune system and enhance blood circulation and digestion ( dependent variables).

TYPES OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS According to Direction DIRECTIONAL NON-DIRECTIONAL Illustrates the direct association of the impact of the independent variable with the dependent variable, whether it is positively or negatively affected . It is a premise that a relationship exists between two variables. However, the direction of the effect is not specifically determined .

EXAMPLES DIRECTIONAL NON-DIRECTIONAL Students who are eating nutritious food have higher grades than students not having a proper meal. There is a significant difference in the average grades between those students that have proper nutritious meals and those that do not have proper meals.

TYPES OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS According to Claim NULL ALTERNATIVE It exists when you consider that there is no relationship between the independent and dependent variables It is an alternate statement expressed to be tested in order to generate the desired output when the empirical or working hypothesis is not accepted

EXAMPLES NULL ALTERNATIVE There is no significant relationship between social media usage and anxiety levels among teenagers. There is a significant relationship between social media usage and anxiety levels among teenagers.

Let’s Hypo-QUIZ-es! There is an association between job tenure and salary levels among employees in the company. ALTERNATIVE NON-DIRECTIONAL SIMPLE No. 0f Variables Direction Claim

Let’s Hypo-QUIZ-es! The growth of the specific plant species is influenced by a complex interaction of environmental factors including temperature, humidity, and air quality. ALTERNATIVE NON-DIRECTIONAL COMPLEX No. 0f Variables Direction Claim

Let’s Hypo-QUIZ-es! Increasing the dosage of the medication will lead to a greater reduction in blood pressure. ALTERNATIVE DIRECTIONAL SIMPLE No. 0f Variables Direction Claim

HypoQuest : Null vs. Alternative 1. Is there a significant difference in the mean test scores of male and female senior high school students in a mathematics exam? 2. Is there a significant correlation between the number of hours spent on extracurricular activities and GPA among senior high school students?

HYPOTHESIZE SCENARIO: Mr. Cruz would like to test the effectiveness of fertilizer to the crop yield and growth of a rice plant. He identifies two types of fertilizers: organic (Fish Emulsion) and inorganic (Urea).

HYPOTHESIZE Re search Question: “Is there a significant difference on the crop yield and growth of rice plants when using organic (Fish Emulsion) versus inorganic (Urea) fertilizer?"

HYPOTHESIZE Null Hypothesis (H0): "There is no statistically significant difference in the crop yield and growth of rice plants when using organic (Fish Emulsion) or inorganic (Urea) fertilizer.“ Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): "There is a statistically significant difference in the crop yield and growth of rice plants when using organic (Fish Emulsion) versus inorganic (Urea) fertilizer.

ABSTRACTION 1. What is the significance of writing the research hypothesis? 2. How does hypothesizing help you as a student or in your daily life?

EVALUATION

Question #1 Question #1 A An educated guess. Question #1 B Question #1 C Question #1 D A tentative answer to the research question. A testable prediction on what you expect to happen with the variables in your study. Which of the following describes a research hypothesis? All of these.

Question #2 Question #1 A What is the average daily water consumption of residents in a particular city? Question #1 B Question #1 C Question #1 D How do different age groups in a community perceive climate change? What are the most common factors contributing to employee turnover in a particular company? Which of these research questions can be hypothesized? Is there a statistically significant difference in test scores between students who received tutoring and those who did not?

Question #3 Question #1 A Directional Hypothesis Question #1 B Question #1 C Question #1 D Non-directional Hypothesis Null hypothesis What type of hypothesis illustrates the direct association of the impact of the independent variable with the dependent variable, whether it is positively or negatively affected? Alternative hypothesis

Question #4 Question #1 A The number of hours spent studying is positively correlated with academic performance. Question #1 B Question #1 C Question #1 D The number of hours spent studying is not correlated with academic performance. There is no significant association between the number of hours spent studying and academic performance. Which of the following states an alternative hypothesis in the null hypothesis: There is no relationship between the number of hours spent studying and academic performance. None of these.

Question #5 Question #1 A There is no statistically significant relationship bet social media usage and stress level among teenagers. Question #1 B Question #1 C Question #1 D There is a statistically significant relationship bet social media usage and stress level among teenagers. The social media usage among teenagers is not significantly related to their stress level. Formulate a research hypothesis in the question: “Is there a statistically significant relationship between social media usage and stress level among teenagers?” All of these.

ADDITIONAL TASK Write a research hypothesis of your study based on your research questions.
