What is listening? Listening is a skill. It is one of the communication skills like reading, speaking and writing. Listening is a sound vibration, as perceived by the sense of hearing. In other words, it’s an act of hearing attentively. Sixty percent of our working day is spent in listening but one third to one fourth percent of what we hear is forgotten after eight hours, a fact which indicates that learning how to listen well is very important.

What is the difference between hearing and listening? HEARING LISTENING physical, natural and passive process is a physical & mental process; active and learned process

Listening is not the same as hearing. People usually hear the entire message, but too often its meaning is lost or distorted. Listening is hard because the listener must grasp the speaker’s message and point of view. This requires creative listening (active listening for total meaning).

Task 3: Tell Which Purpose Directions: Match the listening purposes in Column A with their corresponding descriptions in Column B. Write the letter of the correct answer in the Your Answer Column. A C B

Task 4: Agree or Disagree? Directions: Read the statements about listening strategies in the table and put a star in the column that corresponds to your response.

Task 5: Delve That Song Directions: Read or listen to the song entitled “Superman“ by Five For Fighting. Then, answer the processed questions that follow

Processed Questions: 1. What is the song all about? The song is about a man that feels as though he is unable to live up to other’s expectations. 2. How does this song make you feel? The song made me feel overwhelmed with my past where I lacked self confidence

3. What idea is the writer concerned about? The writer is concerned about his weaknesses as a human being and that he is not perfect. 4. Does the song make you aware of something you did not know before? What is it? Yes. I discovered that having greater responsibilities can be exhausting if they are always expected of you.

5. Do you consider yourself a hero? Why? 6. How do you feel this song connects with your generation? Yes, I can consider myself as a hero but not like in the comic or television. I help others and respect them. I’m studying hard for my parents and for myself and studying is hard and not easy. Like the other hero I’m a strong person and kind . With my generation today, most teenagers lack those qualities of heroism like for example courage, bravery, honesty, self-sacrifice, determination, etc.
