2. It comes as no surprise, that the shipping companies are the most crucial part of the global supply chain. The container shipping lines, with a current active fleet of over 6,200 vessels and a capacity of more than 24.9 million TEU, are transferring a major amount of any kind of goods and products across the world. 90 % of World Goods Traffic is carried on sea. Top 7 Shipping Lines account for 77% of Traffic.

Updates / Information   Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) - 1 TEU: 4,287,473 Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland Year of Foundation: 1970 Revenue: 28 billion US Dollars Employees: 100,000 Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is the biggest shipping company in the world, which overtook Maersk in late 2021. MSC currently operates a fleet of 646 cargo vessels and has 524 offices across 155 nations. The company sails on more than 215 trade routes with over 500 ports of call worldwide. The 50-year old company was formed by a seafarer named Captain Gianluigi Aponte when he bought his first vessel,  Patricia  and then  Rafaela  with which he opened a shipping line between the Mediterranean and Somalia. Now, the company operates a modern fleet comprising of the Gulsan Class vessels which are a new class of sustainable container ships, to minimize the environmental impact. The company also has a division called MSC Cruises which focuses on holiday cruises which was formed in 1989. The company has a total market share of 17%.

Moller-Maersk is the second biggest shipping company in the world. It has been at the top from 1996 to 2021. The company is a family business and is run by the Moller family. It is of more than a hundred years old, and currently has a fleet of about 735 container ships which includes 330 self-owned and 405 chartered vessels. For the future, the company has plans to add methanol-powered ships to its fleet. The Danish company operates various diverse business segments which include logistics, terminals and towage, ocean, manufacturing and many others. Maersk’s digital container logistics platform TradeLens serves over 98 directly integrated ports and terminals. As of January 2022, as the second largest container ship liner in the world, the company held 17% of the global TEU, equivalent to that of its 2M Alliance counterpart MSC.

Updates / Information CMA-CGM - 3 TEU: 3,200,673 Headquarters: Marseille, France Year of Foundation: 1978 Revenue: 31.45 billion US Dollar Employees: 110,000 CMA-CGM is the world’s third largest shipping company, an is France’s leading container shipping company. CMA-CGM S.A. was formed 43 years ago as a result of a series of mergers between previously established shipping corporations. Since then, it has been a worldwide leading shipping group using 257 routes between 420 ports in 160 different nations ensuring coverage to more than 80% ports worldwide. The name CMA-CGM is the abbreviation of the names of two predecessor companies,  Compaigne Maritime d’ Affretement (CMA) Compaigne Generale Maritime (CGM)  [French] which translates as “Maritime Freighting Company” and “General Maritime Company”. In the September of 2020 CMA-CGM inducted a 23,000 TEU container ship in its fleet of 566 container vessels. The CMA-CGM JACQUES SAADE named after its founder Jacques Saade is the largest LNG powered ship in the world. the company has a total market share of about 12.7%.

COSCO Shipping - 4 TEU: 3,022,882 Headquarters: Beijing, China Year of Foundation: 1961 Revenue: 44.6 billion US Dollars Employees: 118,240 China Ocean Shipping Company popularly known as COSCO Shipping, is the world’s fourth largest shipping company, and is the largest Chinese shipping company. It is a former Chinese government owned shipping and logistics supplier company. This company gained its recognition after coming up as the integration of China Shipping Company and COSCO group in 2016. With a fleet of about 509 vessels COSCO serves 401 international and domestic shipping routes and calls in 356 ports in 105 nations. The company has a market share of 11.6%

Hapag-Lloyd - 5 TEU: 1,745,032 Headquarters: Hamburg, Germany Year of Foundation: 1970 Revenue: 14.5 billion US Dollar Employees: 13,117 The Hapag-Lloyd AG is the fifth largest shipping company in the world. It is one of the most renowned and well featured German international shipping and container transportation companies. This 50-year-old company was formed by the merger of two German companies, namely, Hamburg-American Line (Hapag) and Norddeutscher Lloyd. Hapag-Lloyd operates with a fleet of about 250 vessels with 392 sales offices spread over 129 countries worldwide. The company transports containerized cargo on several major trade routes around the world, the most prominent ones being Latin America, Middle East, trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific trade routes. Hapag-Lloyd has a 7.2% market share.

8. Ocean Network Express (ONE) - 6 TEU: 1,577,156 Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan Year of Foundation: 2017 Employees: 14,000 Ocean Network Express Holding Ltd. is the world’s sixth largest shipping company. Also, it is one of the newest companies that has appeared in this list. Jointly owned by the Japanese shipping companies Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), K-Line and NYK, the company has a fleet of about 220 vessels combined and offers 130 services each week with a coverage across 120 nations. The company was formed as a part of a greater process of consolidation that was occurring in the container shipping industry during 2016. Due to poor profits and surplus capacity the three companies merged their container shipping divisions forming the sixth largest container shipping company in the world. Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has a 38% stake in the joint venture whereas Mitsui O.S.K Lines and K Line control 31% each. Recently ONE has announced the formation of a new Green Strategy Department which will be involved in the environmental sustainability projects. The company has a market share of about 6.1%.

Evergreen Lines - 7 TEU: 1,477,644 Headquarters: Taoyuan City, Taiwan Year of Foundation: 1968 Revenue: 4.6 billion US Dollars Employees: 6,700 Evergreen Lines is the seventh largest shipping company in the world. Evergreen Marine Corporation (Taiwan), Italia Marittima, Evergreen Marine (UK), Evergreen Marine (Singapore) and Evergreen Marine(Hong Kong) all together comprise to seize the name Evergreen Line. The company operates with a fleet of about 200 vessels and its trade routes are from the Far East to North America, Central America and the Caribbean; from the Far East to Northern Europe and Eastern Mediterranean; Europe to the East coast of North America; Far East to Australia, Mauritius, South Africa and South America and many more. Evergreen is a one of its kind company that has built and chartered twenty 12,000 TEU F-type vessels so as to reduce the fuel and consumption and green house gas emissions. With its fleet the company serves over 250 ports of call worldwide. Evergreen Line has a total market share of about 5.9%.
