Lubricants Topic Assembly Prepared By- Junaid Javed (Trainer) Guided By- Mr. Martin Buehler (Swiss Trainer )

LUBRICATION Lubrication is science of reducing friction by application of suitable substance called lubricant between the rubbing surfaces of bodies having relative motion.

Classification of lubricants The lubricants are classified in three groups: Liquid lubricants like mineral or vegetable oil. Semi-solid lubricants like grease. Solid lubricants like graphite or molybdenum disulphide .

Objectives of lubricant To reduce friction. To carry away heat generated due to friction. To reduce/prevent wear. P rotection against corrosion.

MINERAL OIL Mineral oil consists of hydrocarbons, which are obtained by distillation of crude oil.

Vegetable and ANIMAL oil Vegetable oil used for lubrication are castor oil, rapeseed oil, palm oil and olive oil. Animal oil used for lubrication are lard oil, tallow oil and certain oils obtained from marine species, such as whales sperm, dolphin jaws.

Advantages of mineral oil compared to vegetable or animal oil Chemically inert. Little tendency to oxidize or form corrosive acids. Have wide range of viscosities. After periodic filtration, they can be reused without any loss or change in property. At normal temperature, they are not liable to spontaneous ignition.

Advantages of vegetable and animal oil Retain their viscosities much better than mineral oil at high temperature. Called as fixed oils because they are non-volatile unless there is a chemical decomposition.

Disadvantages of vegetable and animal oil At low temperature, these oils solidify and become fats. T he fat is melted at 65 C and becomes oil . These oils react with oxygen in the atmosphere and become acidic .

USES Castor oil is used in the past as lubricant in racing cars and aero-engines . Rapeseed oil is added in mineral oil to increase viscosity . Cotton seed oil is used as thickener in mineral oils . Lard oil is used as a cutting oil. In light machine tools, sperm oil is used for spindle lubrication.

Grease is a semisolid substance, composed of mineral oil and soap. Grease is recommended for hard to reach parts, where leakage of oil is objectionable. Also used in applications where clearance is large due to rough machining. GREASE
