whichcanbedangerousinplaceslikeoilplatforms,underwater&on
planesLi-Ficanbethoughtofasalight-basedWi-Fi.

LEDcanbeswitchedon&offfasterthanthehumaneyecandetectsince
theoperatingspeedofLEDsislessthan1μs,therebycausingthelight
sourcetoappeartobecontinuouslyon.Thisinvisibleon-offactivity
enablesdatatransmissionusingbinarycodes.SwitchingonanLEDis
binary‘1’,switchingitoffisbinary‘0’.Itispossibletoencodedatain
lightbyvaryingtherateatwhichLEDsflickeron&offtogivedifferent
stringsof1s&0s.Modulationissorapidthathumanscannotnoticeit.A
photodetectorthenreceivesthesignal&convertsitintooriginaldata.
Thismethodofusingrapidpulsesoflighttotransmitinformation
wirelesslyistechnicallyreferredtoasVisibleLightCommunication
(VLC).ThetermLi-Fihasbeeninspiredduetoitspotentialtocompete
withconventionalWi-Fi.TheVLCusesvisiblelightb/w400THz(780
nm)&800THz(375nm)astheopticalcarrierfordatatransmission&for
illumination.

Dataratesofgreaterthan100Mbpscanbeachievedbyusinghigh
speedLEDswithadequatemultiplexing.Paralleldatatransmissionusing
arraysofLEDswhereeachLEDtransmitsaseparatestreamofdatacanbe
usedtoincreasetheVLCdatarate.Thoughthelightshavetobekeptonin
ordertotransmitdata,theycanbedimmedtothepointthattheyarenot
visibletohumansbutstillbecapableoftransmittingdata.

TherearcvariousadvantagesofusingaLi-Fimachine:
Moresecurity&vulnerabletounauthorizedaccess.
Availabilityofdataisincreased.
Lesspowerisrequired.
ThespeedofLi-Fiisveryhigh,&wecanwatchthevideoswithout
buffering.
ThelightoftheLi-Fidoesn’trunthroughthepartition,therefore,itis
moreprotected&hackingisnotpossible.
Li-Fiutilizeslightwaveswhichareharmless.
Thedatatransferismoreprotected.

TherearcvariousdisadvantagesofusingaLi-Fimachine:
Inradiowavespectrumthedatatransmissionsecurityisveryless.
Lotofdatacannotbetransferredsimultaneously.
Healthissues.
Bandwidthusageislimited.
ItrequiresLOS(lineofsight),aswellasthereceiver,wouldnotbea
moveininside.
Themainproblemishowthereceiverwillsendthedatabacktothe
transmittersection.
Itdoesn’tworkinthedimareas.
