METHODS OF EXTRACTION

Extraction is of five types :-
+ Maceration

* Percolation

* Digestion

« Infusion

* Decoction

MACERATION

The process of extraction in wi
powdered/size reduced drug is soaked in
suitable solvent or mixture of solvents till the
solvent penetrates into the drug is called

Extraction.

Maceration is of two types —
(a)Simple Maceration

(b)Modified Maceration

SIMPLE MACERATION:

1. Done for organised drugs (present
inside the cell). Eg. Cinchona

2. Entire solvent is added ata time.

3. Retention is more
4. We need to express the marc

5.We filter the decanted product
6. We never make up the volume

7, Simple maceration takes a longer

MODIFIED MACERATION)

1. Done for unorganized drugs(not
present inside the cell). Eg- Latex,Gum

2.Initially we add 80% of solvent at a
time and then the rest in subsequent
fraction as per demand.
Subsequent fraction = (V, —Va /2 +
Va
where V; = total volume and Vi =
volume retained

3.Retentionis poor

4, There is no need to express the marc
5. We go for straining

6. We add the solvent to make up

7.Modified Maceration takes much
faster time(2-7 days]
