Lesson 3 Diffrent Kinds of Macrame Knots

Larks Head Knot is used to tie the yarn mouted to its anchor of starting cord. The Larks Head Knot is one of the most frequently used decorative knots in Macramé. Another name or this decorative knot is the Cow Hitch. Procedure: Pass the rope around the object, back around itself, around the object in the reverse direction.

Vertical Larks Head Knots is often used to attach new macrame cords to existing cords. This is similar to a regular larks head knots, just tied in a different orientation.

Sqaure Knot is two half knots in opposite directions. Procedure: Take two ropes and cross them(red over blue) to form a half knot . Cross them a second time(red over blue again) and pull the ends tight to form a square knot.

Spiral Knot is a sequence of half-square knots, worked one after another in a vertical column.

Half Hitch Knot is a very simple knot. The half hitch knot is more commonly combined in different way to create the rest of the knots in this catergory.

Endless Falls Knots is a simple deorative knots thats often taught in children’group. It can be used to make bracelets, pet collars and belts and other similar projects.

Snake Knots The snake knot is a nice base for a zipper pull, lanyard, key bring. Overhand stoppper knot goes well with it and the ends can be trimmed closed to the knots.

Alternating Half Hitch Knot is very common kotting used in macrame products. It has a chain-like appearance, and is narrower. In some of vintage pattern, the name of this knots is the Chain Stitch . In modern texts this design is sometimes called Zigzag Braid.

Cross Knots Cross knots is one of the easist Chinese Macrame knots. Its often used in projects where a stable loop is needed for hanging or for a clasp. The forlded segment form a cross on the front and a diamond shape on the back.

Berry Knots is a modern term for the vintage Square Knot Button. This knot is made from a series of consecutive sqaure knots, weaved together to form a berry-like or button-like shaped. It is popular decorative knot found in many modern macrame projects including wall hangings, plant hangers and handbags. Ensure you familiarize yourself with the square knot prior to making the berry knot.

Josephine Knot is an elegant knot that looks best in long, lacy designs with many strands. This knot is very distinctive and unique looking

Double Half Hitch Knot/ Clove Hitch Knot Are made by tying two half-hitch knots around a filler cord. By working a series of double half-hitch knots around the same anchor cord, you create a raised line in your design.

Diagonal Double Half Hitch Knot The row is positioned diagonally instead of horizontally. Tighten each knot firmly to make the raised bar as neat as possible.

Gathering Knot / Wrapping Knot are used to secure a group of cords. You can use this knot at the beginning or end of a macrame project.

Macrame Knots Tips and Tricks Used good quality cotton cord. Keep your knots tight and even to ensure a neat, professional looking finished product. Practice on a small scale before tackling larger projects. Plan out your design beforehand, and measure your cords carefully to ensure the right length. Experiment with different materials and knot combinations to unique desings.
