Geography of New Mexico Despite being mostly arid desert, New Mexico has one of the most diverse landscapes of any U.S. state, ranging from wide, auburn-colored deserts and verdant grasslands , to broken mesas and high, snow-capped peaks. [5] Close to a third of the state is covered in timberland , with heavily forested mountain wildernesses dominating the north. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains , the southernmost part of the Rocky Mountains , run roughly north–south along the east side of the Rio Grande , in the rugged, pastoral north. The Great Plains extend into the eastern third of the state, most notably the Llano Estacado whose westernmost boundary is marked by the Mescalero Ridge escarpment . The northwestern quadrant of New Mexico is dominated by the Colorado Plateau , characterized by unique volcanic formations, dry grasslands and shrublands, open pinyon-juniper woodland , and mountain forests. [6] The Chihuahuan Desert , which is the largest in North America, extends through the south.
Geography of Arizona Southern Arizona is known for its desert climate, with very hot summers and mild winters. Northern Arizona features forests of pine, Douglas fir , and spruce trees; the Colorado Plateau ; mountain ranges (such as the San Francisco Mountains ); as well as large, deep canyons , with much more moderate summer temperatures and significant winter snowfalls.
The Pueblo O riginated approximately 7,000 years ago S ettled in northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. Ancestral Pueblos built their homes in complex systems that could only be accessed through swings or rock climbing, with the buildings built to align with the solar and lunar cycles. Traditional Pueblo architecture included limestone or adobe bricks (bricks made from clay and water) to construct " multistoried, permanent, attached homes .“ Some contained as many as 800 rooms

The Iroquois lived mainly in Ontario, upstate New York, and some sections of Pennsylvania . An established group, they settled near lakes and weren't as nomadic as other Native American tribes . They did move every ten years or so not to deplete the wildlife of one area too quickly. The Iroquois mainly lived in the regions that were easy to defend, like those close to hills and water.
Ontario is located in East/Central Canada. It is Canada's second largest province by land area. Its physical features vary greatly from the Mixedwood Plains in the southeast to the boreal forests and tundra in the north .
Upstate New York. The headwaters of the Delaware , Susquehanna , Mohawk , Hudson, and Allegheny rivers are located in the region. Several regions Upstate are characterized by major mountain ranges, large lakes, and extensive forests. The Allegheny Plateau extends into west and central New York from the south. The Catskill Mountains lie within Lower New York in the southeastern part of the state, closer to New York City. The Catskills and the Allegheny Plateau are part of the Appalachian chain . By contrast, Northern New York contains the Adirondack Mountains , which are sometimes mistaken as part of the Appalachians but are in fact a southern extension of the Canadian Shield .
The state has five geographical regions: Allegheny Plateau , Ridge and Valley , Atlantic Coastal Plain , Piedmont , and Erie Plain . Pennsylvania's diverse topography produces a variety of climates, though the entire state experiences cold winters and humid summers.
The Iroquois Longhouse was the center of community and family life in the tribe . These houses were made from layers of elm bark and built around a frame of logs . They could usually hold up to sixty people. Longhouses were divided into apartments with fireplaces in the middle of each hall. Two families typically shared a fireplace.
Ate corn , beans and squash also harvested maple syrup , blackberries , raspberries , huckleberries , strawberries , walnuts , hickory nuts , acorns , beechnuts , chestnuts , skunk cabbage , mustard greens , dandelions , and milkweed .
