Geography of New Mexico Despite being mostly arid desert, New Mexico has one of the most diverse  landscapes  of any U.S. state, ranging from wide, auburn-colored deserts and  verdant grasslands , to broken  mesas  and high, snow-capped peaks. [5]  Close to a  third of the state is covered in timberland , with heavily forested mountain wildernesses dominating the north. The  Sangre de Cristo Mountains , the southernmost part of the  Rocky Mountains , run roughly north–south along the east side of the  Rio Grande , in the rugged, pastoral north. The  Great Plains  extend into the eastern third of the state, most notably the  Llano Estacado whose westernmost boundary is marked by the  Mescalero Ridge   escarpment . The northwestern quadrant of New Mexico is dominated by the  Colorado Plateau , characterized by unique volcanic formations, dry grasslands and shrublands, open  pinyon-juniper woodland , and mountain forests. [6]  The  Chihuahuan Desert , which is the largest in North America, extends through the south.

Geography of Arizona Southern Arizona  is known for its  desert  climate, with very hot summers and mild winters.  Northern Arizona  features forests of pine,  Douglas fir , and  spruce  trees; the  Colorado Plateau ; mountain ranges (such as the  San Francisco Mountains ); as well as large, deep  canyons , with much more moderate summer temperatures and significant winter snowfalls.

The Pueblo O riginated approximately 7,000 years ago S ettled in northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. Ancestral Pueblos built their homes in complex systems that could only be accessed through swings or rock climbing, with the buildings built to align with the solar and lunar cycles. Traditional Pueblo architecture included limestone or adobe bricks (bricks made from clay and water) to construct " multistoried, permanent, attached homes .“ Some contained as many as 800 rooms

They made very refined pottery Also clothing and blankets from cotton and leather “ moccasins ”

The Apache Nomadic Wore buffalo skins Slept in skins tents Ate buffalo , deer , wild plants , nuts and Roots Stole food from the Pueblo people Fierce and warlike

The Iroquois lived mainly in  Ontario, upstate New York, and some sections of Pennsylvania . An established group, they settled near lakes and weren't as nomadic as other  Native American tribes . They did move every ten years or so not to deplete the wildlife of one area too quickly. The Iroquois mainly lived in the regions that were easy to defend, like those close to hills and water.

Ontario is located in East/Central Canada. It is Canada's second largest province by land area. Its physical features vary greatly from the  Mixedwood Plains in the southeast to the boreal forests and tundra in the north .

Upstate New York. The headwaters of the  Delaware ,  Susquehanna ,  Mohawk , Hudson, and  Allegheny  rivers are located in the region. Several regions Upstate are characterized by major mountain ranges, large lakes, and extensive forests. The  Allegheny Plateau  extends into west and central New York from the south. The  Catskill Mountains  lie within Lower New York in the southeastern part of the state, closer to New York City. The Catskills and the Allegheny Plateau are part of the  Appalachian chain . By contrast, Northern New York contains the  Adirondack Mountains , which are sometimes mistaken as part of the Appalachians but are in fact a southern extension of the  Canadian Shield .

The state has five geographical regions:  Allegheny Plateau ,  Ridge and Valley ,  Atlantic Coastal Plain ,  Piedmont , and  Erie Plain . Pennsylvania's diverse topography produces a variety of climates, though the entire state experiences cold winters and humid summers.

The Iroquois Longhouse was the  center of community and family life in the tribe . These houses  were made from layers of elm bark and built around a frame of logs . They could usually hold up to sixty people. Longhouses were divided into apartments with fireplaces in the middle of each hall. Two families typically shared a fireplace.

The men used spears , hooks , and nets to fish .  Brave warriors

Northwest geography Northwest , also called  Pacific Northwest ,  region , northwestern U.S., including the states of  Oregon  and  Washington  and part of  Idaho . The Pacific Northwest Region includes the rugged-mystical Pacific Coast, temperate Coastal Mountain rainforests, emerald green river valleys, imposing volcanic snow-capped mountains, and an expansive, arid, andsunbathed high desert .
