MAINTAINING SUpPLIES AND EQUIPMENTS IN WARD

Introduction Equipment and supplies are some of the critical parts of overall material management. Functional , accurate , and safe clinical equipment and supplies are requirment in the provision of health service. Well maintained equipment will give nurse greater confidence in the reliability of its performance and contribute to a high standard of client care . Equipment management is an essential issue for safety and cost in modern hospital operation.

MEANINg EQUIPMENT The term “equipment” means all items necessary for the functioning of all service of the hospital including accounting and records , maintains of building , launtary , nursing units etc . SUPPLIES Supplies are those items that are used up or consumed ; hence , the term “consumable” is for supplies. The supply in the hospital includincludes drugs, surgical goods , chemical , antiseptic , food materials , stationaries , linen supply etc.

PLANNING OF EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES Equipment and supplies are an essential part of health care. Thse are necessary means in diagnosis , monitoring , and treatment of patients suffering from disease conditions. These are also the means to control the environment by supplying heat and light and to provide necessities. Example: water, electricity , feed patients .

GOALS OF PLANNING To plan and budget for equipment and supplies per directives / policies . To develop planning tools . To estimate realistic equipment related allocation. To prepare long term plans and budget . To review annual plans and budgets. To monitor progress to improve planning and budgeting.

OBJECTIVES To get the current equipment situation. To develop a plan for equipment. To calculate expenditure required. To extent the short term and long term plans. To make the budget calculation. To device methods to review progress and for monitoring.

STEPS / PLANNING PROCESS OF EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES

DISPOSAL OF EQUIPMENT The Condemned articles are stored and later disposed. Functional items are kept for training purposes. The waste products disposed according to biomedical waste management method. Public auction are condected depending on the earning revenue value of items. Immediately after the disposal it should be entered in the register. The officer should hand over the details to the party and issue gate pass. The store officer records the disposed and removed items in the register.

NURSE’S ROLE IN EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLY MANAGEMENT The crtical role of nurse managers are as follows; Procuring Receiving and inspecting Storing Issuing, distributing and maintaining inventory Maintenance of record

Role of nurse manager in maintaining equipment and supply The nurse manager should apply a systematic approach to maintain equipment and supply in the unit . It includes: Input Process Output

Input Participate in estimating the demand for equipment and supplies. Know about hospital policy for Procuring,Indenting, stocking, etc. Know about nursing norms for equipment and supply per nursing council. Develop ward policy per requirement. Communicate higher authority aboutthe gap between demand and supply. Conduct meeting with superior s and subordinate to estimate requirments of materials. Prepare guidelines for handing and taking over for the stafff.

Process Maintain an up – to- date inventory of equipment and supplies. Send requisition monthly, weekly,and daily per the policy. Have inventory control and maintain buffer stock for emergency. Distribute material adequately for the evening and night shift. Conduct supervisory rounds;check daily and periodically emergency, general,and life-saving equipment regularly. Make sure the proper utilization of articles and supplies by the nurses Communicate all the team members about the “out of stock”and non-functional equipment and materials Develop an orientation plan for the patients and their relatives about the availability and non-availability of particular article, equipment and supplies. Maintain record and report of equipment and supplies

Output All the staff must know hospital and ward Policies related to equipment and supplies. There should be an adequate and regular supply of equipment and other supplies without any interruption All materials and articles should be in working order..
