BASIC
COMPUTER
CONCEPTS

2
Hardware vs. Software
Hardware

The computer equipment

Includes printers, monitors, disk drives, etc.
Software

Programs which tell the computer what to
do

Examples - word processing, gradebook,
tutorials, games, etc.

4
History of Computers
Charles Babbage - father of computer

1800’s planned analytical engine
ENIAC - developed at end of WW II
1951 - 1963 1st and 2nd generation

very large, used unreliable vacuum tubes
1963 - present - 3rd and 4th generation

smaller, faster - use transistors and
integrated circuits

5
History - Microcomputers
Apple

First sold in late 1970’s

Developed by Jobs and Wozniak
IBM Personal Computers

First sold in 1981

Was quickly accepted by businesses

IBM compatibles soon developed

6
Computer - Social Impact
Threat to privacy
Reduce personal interactions
Displace workers and change workplace

Create two tiered society
Computer failures cause great damage
Artificial Intelligence

Create a “new life form”

Machines smarter than their creators

7
Types of Computers
Minicomputers
Mainframes
Supercomputers
Personal Computers (PC)

8
Types of Computers – Personal
Computers (PC)
Also called
Microcomputers
Available in desktop
size, notebook size
and handheld
Can be IBM, IBM
Compatible or Apple

9
Computer Operations
Input Processing Output
External Storage

10
Input Devices
Keyboard
Mouse
Others (Pointers - Track point, trackball, touch
pad (replaces mouse on notepads), Scanner, Digital
camera, Touch screen, Voice)

11
Output Devices
Monitor
Printer
Disk Drive

Can also be input device
Modem

Can also be input device

12
Printers
Laser
Ink Jet
Dot Matrix

13
Printers - Laser
Works similar to a copy machine.

Color printers available but more expensive.
Fast, quiet, with excellent quality.
More expensive to buy and operate.
Some units scan, photocopy, and print quietly.

14
Printers - Ink Jet
Squirts small jet of ink onto paper to
form characters
Replaced dot matrix
Quiet
Does a good job of color
Good quality and reliability

15
Printers - Dot Matrix
Strikes pins against ribbon to print
Comes in 9 and 24 pin
Once very popular
Now replaced by ink-jet and laser

16
Printers - Speed
Measured in pages per minute (PPM)
Laser printers range from 20-45 ppm

Color printing is slower

17
Printers - Quality of Print
One measure is dots per inch (DPI)
300 dpi for general purpose uses
600 dpi for higher quality
1200 dpi for photo quality
May have different vertical and
horizontal resolution
600 x 300
Other factors can affect quality

18
Networks
Connects computers
LAN - Local Area
WAN - Wide Area
Wireless
Allows sharing of
programs, files,
printers, etc.
Server is “main”
computer

19
Modems - General
Allows 2
computers to
communicate
over phone lines.
Can be internal
or external.
Can also have
fax capabilities.

20
Modems
Bits per second(bps) indicates speed

Old modems - 9,600, 14,400, 28,800, 33,600

56,000 (56K) has becoming standard
Ways of connecting to the Internet

Dial-up modem – used in most homes

Cable modem – uses TV cable lines

DSL – modified phone line

T1 line – used by schools, businesses, etc.

26
Applications Software
Helps you to accomplish a certain task
Examples

Word processing - memos, reports, etc.

Spreadsheets - budgets, etc.

Database - search, sort, select data

Educational - simulations, practice

Graphics - charts, diagrams

Desktop publishing - pamphlets, etc.

Maintaining Your Computer

Why Maintain Your
Computer?
Bikes must have air pumped in their tires. Cars
must have their oil changed.
Your computer must be kept in running order as
well. What can you do to keep it in tip-top shape?

3 Steps to Maintenance:
Remember your
A,B,Cs (and Ds)
Clean your
hardware when
needed
Know what to fix
and what to have
others fix

Now I Know my A,B,Cs...
A = Antivirus
B = Backup
C = Clean Up
D = Defragment

Antivirus
Virus - A program created to destroy
or interfere with your
software/hardware
Run Norton AntiVirus once a week to
prevent infestation or repair damage
Need more info? Email me for the
PowerPoint on Viruses

Backup
Computers aren’t perfect; stuff can
get lost or damaged
Protect yourself; backup your work
weekly
Where to backup to:
Floppy Disks - not reliable
Email - safe for one file or two
Server (best, ask for PPT on
Backing Up)

Clean Up
Easier to find stuff
if you clean up
Only keep files you
must work on ASAP
on your desktop
and file the rest.
Email me for the
PowerPoint on File
Management

Defragment
Your computer is in a hurry and
throws every piece of data in
whatever empty spot it finds
Not organized and slows you down
Go to Start>Accessories>System
Tools>Disk Defragmenter and run it
monthly to speed up your computer

Second Step: Cleaning
Dust, skin, and
more can mess up
your computer
Clean your
hardware every 3
months (smoker in
house) to 5 months
(no smoker)

How To Clean
What? How?
Case Damp cloth (no solvents)
Don’t block air vents
CD Dry cloth (against grooves)
Laptop ScreenDry cloth (little rubbing
alcohol on cloth if bad)
Desktop
Screen
Window cleaner on cloth

More Cleaning:
What? How?
Keyboard Use compressed air or shake
upside down (don’t use
vacuum!)
Mouse Turn the donut piece on
bottom the opposite direction
of the arrows, let ball will fall
out; scratch back and forth on
rollers inside mouse; tissue off
ball and replace ball and cover

Last Word about Cleaning:
Keep your computer area free of
stray papers
Never lean anything against your
computer
Avoid food and drink
Promptly clean any spills before
they dry
Supervise tots carefully!

Last Step: What to fix?
We are smart!
We are Lynxes!
We can fix our
computer’s minor
ailments!
(Repeat the above 3
times to yourself)

Fixing Easy Stuff:
Problem? Solution?
Frozen
Computer
See PPT on Frozen Computer
Black MonitorCheck both cables on back of
monitor, monitor power
button
Mouse
doesn’t work
Check mouse cord to
computer; clean inside
mouse

Other easy fixes:
Problem? Solution?
Can’t get
floppy out
Don’t force! Use finger or
non-metal object to push
bent piece down and pull out
Not printingOut of paper? Power on?
Paper jam? Go to
Start>Settings>
Printers, right click on
printer, left click on “work off
line”

Finding Stuff on Your
Computer

When it ain’t easy...
Write down what’s going on (include
specific programs or things you did to
solve the problem) and email Stewart
Best to be overly cautious than take a
risk and damage your computer
Ask how the repair is done so you may
be able to fix/prevent it in the future
