he JOKA-BBD Bagh Broad Guage Metro Railway line was sanctioned in the year
T2010 as elevated corridor. Subsequently to avoid several constraints and to maintain
skyline of Maidan Area, Mominpur (Ex)-Esplanade Section of the corridor was converted to
underground with short termination of project at Esplanade. e total project length
(Station C/C from Joka to Esplanade) is 14 km out of which work from Joka to Taratala for a
length of 6.5 km as Phase-I was inaugurated on 30th Dec, 2022 by Shri Narendra Modi,
hon’ble Prime Minister of India. e horizon of the City of Joy has turned golden on 30th
December, 2022 as a very long cherished dream of citizens of South Kolkata had come true.
Hon'ble Prime Minister flagged off the much awaited train in Joka-Taratala Metro Section
popularly known as the Purple Line in the august presence of Shri Ashwani Vaishnav,
Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology and
Sushri Mamata Banerjee, Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal.
The services were opened for the passenger in JOKA-Taratala section on 2nd Jan, 2023.
ereafter, the work for the stretch from Taratala to Majerhat has been completed and is
proposed for commissioning. On commissioning of the above section, another passenger
interface with Sealdah-Budge Budge section and Circular Railway of Eastern Railway will be
created at the Majerhat Station.
