Manual muscle testing (MMT) FOR KNEE Presented By: SUNAINA AFREEN
Intro * mmt is a procedure used to evaluate the function and strength of an individual or group of muscle. *It is based on the efficiency of the performance of the movement in relation to force of gravity and manual resistance *It helps to determine the extend & the degree of muscular weakness.
Grades of MMT Grade 0 : No contraction or No movement. Grade 1 : flickering of contraction or slight movement. Grade 2 : full Rom eliminating gravity. Grade 3 : full rom against gravity. Grade 4 : full rom against gravity with mim resistance. Grade 5 : full rom against gravity with max resistance.
Knee Flexors Grade: 3,4,5 Pop : standing or prone lying. Poth : on the side to be tested. Stabilization : stabilize the posterior aspect of upper portion of thigh without squeezing the muscular bulk.
Movement Grade 3 : patient flexes the leg, from 90• slight resistance to the movement is placed on lower 1/3 rd and posterior part of leg. Grade 4&5 : (resistance). Apply first minimal and then maximal resistance as compared to the contralateral side or according to age, sex, build on the leg proximal to the ankle in the direction of knee extension lower 3 rd posterior aspect of leg.
Grade: 2,1,0 Pop : side lying or prone lying. Poth : behind the patient or on the side to be tested. Stabilization : stabilize the upper portion of post thigh.
POP : Side lying or prone lying . POTh : Behind the patient or on side to be tested. Stabilization : Stabilize the upper portion of post thigh.Movement Grade 2: Patient flexes the leg through full range of motion. Foot should remain in plantar flexion diminishing the action of Gastrocnemius. Grade 1 : Palpation A fl i cke r of contraction can be palpated for Biceps tendon at aspe c t of knee. Semitendinosus and semi - membranosus is medial to biceps at posteromedial aspect of knee. Grade 0 : Movement absent, no flicker of contraction. Movement
Biceps femoris (outer hamstring) Grade : 4 & 5 . POP : Prone lying . POTh : On the side to be tested. Stabilization : Stabilize the upper part of posterior aspect of the thigh in prone lying. Movement Patient flexes the leg through full range of motion while rotating leg externally. Resistance : Placed on low er third of lateral aspect of leg.

KNEE EXTENSORS Range o f Motion : 135°-145° to 0°. Grade : 3, 4, 5. POP : High sitting or supine lying with kne e at the edge of the plinth. Leg ganging and cush ion under popliteal fo ssa . Contralateral limb flexed at hip and knee. POTh : On the side of the knee to be tested. Stabilization : Stabilize lower third and anterior aspect of thigh without squeezing muscular bulk.
Movement Grade 3 : Patient extends lower leg avoiding al rotational components through full range of motion. Grade 4 & 5 : Resistance . Apply first minimal then maximal resistance as compared from the contralateral limb on the af fe cted limb on the lower third of leg in the direction of knee flexion.
Grade: 2,1,0 POP : Side lying. POTh : Behind the patient. Stabilization : Lower third and anterior aspect of thigh.
Movement Grade 2 : Patient extends through full range of motion avoiding al rotation components. Grade 1 : PalpationA fl i cker of contraction can be felt on lateral and medial aspects of the thigh. Grade 0 : Movement absent, no flicker of contraction.
