Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA)  is a very safe method of abortion for pregnancies in the first trimester, and/or early second trimester all the way up to  14 weeks of gestation

INDICATIONS Incomplete abortion before 13 weeks LMP Molar pregnancy Termination of pregnancy before 13 weeks LMP

Step One: Prepare the Aspirator Step Two : Prepare the Patient 1 2

Step Three: Perform Cervical Antiseptic Prep Step Four : Perform Paracervical Block 3 4

5 6 Step Five: Dilate Cervix and Insert Cannula Step Six : Suction of Uterine Contents

Step Seven: Inspect Tissue 7 Step Eight: Perform Any Concurrent Procedures Such as IUD or Cervical Tear repair 8

Risks and Complications Heavy bleeding (completely soaking 2 pads per hour for 2 hours in a row or more) Fevers (more than 38C or 100.4F) more than 24 hours after the procedure Severe, worsening pelvic pain Continued signs of pregnancy (increasing nausea, breast tenderness, etc.)
