Stephan was very lost. He had been woken up during the night by bright flashes and the ground was shaking. He was scared. After running for 5 hours he ended up in a coniferous forest , in the middle of no-where. It was dark and cold here; he was surrounded with what looked like Christmas trees. A massive change from where he had been. He started walking and ended up in the deciduous forest. It was a lot lighter here as the leaves had fallen off the many oak trees. He should run on as this would go up in flames! After a while he started hearing cars and ran towards them. Everyone was going fast, no-one would stop. They all looked scared. He was on the side of a motorway. He thought that if there was anyone who could help him it would be a priest. He could see a church in the distance. No one was there. The priest must have started to run. The safest place must be near water. Luckily the trains were running and he ran through the train station and onto the train. He eventually got to the coast. It was beautiful, and there was the light of a light house blinking in the distance. All of a sudden there was a loud bang. He ran up to the view point to look. He was hit by a warm blast! Maps often use symbols instead of words to label real-life features and make the maps clearer. With so many features on a map, there would not be enough space to write everything down in words . Symbols can be small pictures, letters, lines or coloured areas to show features like campsites, youth hostels or bus stations . If you look closely at a map, you will see that it is covered in symbols. There will usually be a key next to the map to tell you what the symbols mean.
