The traditional putungan ritual dance from Sta. Cruz, Marinduque has been handed down for numerous generations and is rooted in ancient customs and heritage. It has been a special part of important events in Sta. Cruz and the whole province. The putungan is not done for money but as a type of show. The people who perform it are committed, skilled, hardworking, and a bit shy. They're also good at dancing and singing.
The putungan dance comes from the word " putong ," which means a special crown. This dance is not done often, and it's a way to show respect to important guests and otherspecial folks. This is also done to celebrate for people who finished school, passed bigtests , and became priests.
The putungan dance has been around for a very long time. People in their late 70s say it has been there since they were very young. Back then, mostly older villagers used to doit and not many young people were interested. But things are different now. People understood that putungan is good for making friends and getting along with others. Hence, many groups, mostly with young members, started doing their own putungan dances to have fun and be friends.
The putungan dance is special because it's short, simple, and has little fancy details. It's made up of a song and a dancing team, a small singing group, and a musical group called a rondalla . During the putungan dance, a group of about eight ladies hold baskets with petals and coins. They sprinkle these all around the person being honored. At the same time, there are eight men who wave special leaves with spiky edges called pitugo or oliva leaves. These leaves have sampaguita buds attached to them.
The most important person in the performance is a young lady chosen for her beauty and personality. She gets to bear a crown made of flowers, and this is the main part of the putungan ceremony. While they dance, there is a song that is sung with good wishes for a happy, healthy, and successful life. At the very end of the performance, they throw the remaining petals and coins, place the oliva leaves at the person's feet, and put the flower crown on their head. Everyone shouts "MABUHAY!" which means "Long live!"

A scale or balance is a device to measure weight or mass. These are also known as mass scales, weight scales, mass balances, and weight balances. The traditional scale consists of two plates or bowls suspended at equal distances from a fulcrum.
