Biography:
With background in both architecture and computer programming and more than 20 years of experience as a
practicing architect and digital design leader in Europe, Middle East and Asia Marcin strives to combine his
theoretical and practical knowledge to drive digital change for design and construction organizations, both
private and public.
In Hong Kong, he was involved in designanddigitalisationofsome of the major architectural and infrastructural
projects like MTR XRL Station, Tuen Mun South Extension and TungChungLineExtension. For several years
he also taught BIM and digital design methods as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the
University of Hong Kong(HKU). Teaching strengthened his belief that complex topics should and can be
explained in a simple and user-friendly way and that responding to the practical needs of the design and
construction practitioners is of the utmost importance in managing digital transformation.

PROJECT INFORMATION
Uniqueness and complexity of the architectural design of the roof of WKT Entrance Building required
quite special methods and procedures to rationalize and document the project.
During the conceptual design it turned out that no single softwareplatform would give the architects
all the results that were needed. Rhino, which was the tool used for creating theconceptual model at
an early stage, had later to share the workload with Revit. Rhino was mostly used for parametric
modeling and coordination with Structural team and Revit for more detailed modeling, optimization
and scheduling of cladding as well as producing the documentation.

scope of work
PARAMETRIC DESIGN / BIM PROCESS
West Kowloon Terminus, Hong Kongfor Aedas Ltd.
Stage 1. Conceptual Rationalization.
Developing geometrical rulescontrolingthe roof elements to be modeled. The rules resulted from architectural
design intent, coordination between Architectural and Structural teams and were iteratively updated based both
on 2D sections and a 3D model. The outcome was documented in the Geometry Definition Document.
Stage 2. Modeling and coordinating geometryin Rhino.
Geometrical rules where applied to a Rhino model using Grasshopper parametric engine. Grasshopper allowed
the Architectural team to view on screen and assess in real time any changes to the roof geometry, which resulted
from changing the control parameters. Conclusions where passed as design constraints to the Structural team,
which updated their design parameters or proposed an alternative solution. Afterconfirming the geometry, the
Structural team generated a “stick model” of the structure, which was automatically converted into steel
members inRevitby a purpose written script. Apart from that Rhino generated tables of coordinates of points
describing the setting out of panels in 3D space.
Stage 3. Optimization of cladding panels and glazing sizes by an external purposewrittenscript.
The coordinates from Rhino where processed by an external program (application purpose-written for this project
in C#) to produce optimized and standardized shapes of panels. Without this step, every cladding panel would
have to be slightly different, what would significantly add to the cost and complexity of construction. The program
produced numerical data for cladding and glazing panels, which were further used for precise modeling in Revit.
Stage 4. Modeling in Revit.
Revit family catalog together with an API script in C# were used to model individual cladding panels, place them
precisely in space and assign values to their parameters. Each panel was a complex parametric family, which was
further used for evaluating detailed design options like variations in gaps between cladding panels. By intersecting
those panels with steel and concrete structure from Structural team, the Architectural team could locate panels
with cutouts and their precise shape. The steel and concrete structures were modeled in separate Revit filesand
linked to the main architectural model.
Stage 5. Scheduling cladding panels.
The last step in modeling process was outputting tabular schedules of cladding panels with their precise setting
out coordinates and sizes optimized in stage 3. The schedules became part of a contract documentation used by
the quantity surveyors for calculating total cladding area and amount of steel necessary for sub framing.
