CLAUSE - a group of words that has a subject and a verb and functions as part of a sentence or as a whole sentence. -Clause may or may not be able to stand alone as a complete sentence.

THE TWO MAJOR TYPES OF CLAUSE: Independent /Main Clause- a group of words that can stand on its own as a sentence. It has a subject, a verb, and express a complete thought. Ex. The boys went to the park. Green is my favorite color. John ran the race. My pencil was broken. 2. Dependent/Subordinate Clause- a group words that also contains a subject and a verb, but it is not express a complete thought. Dependent clause begins with subordinating conjunctions or Pronoun, that connects it to the rest of the sentences. Ex. because I woke late this morning… when I go to the movies… before you came to the table… because it was so surprising... because green is my favorite color…

TYPES OF SENTENCE STRUCTURES Simple sentence Compound sentence Complex sentence Compound- complex sentence

Examples: Stories entertain. (simple sentence) Stories and riddles entertain. (simple sentence w/ compound subject) Stories entertain and amuse. ( simple subject w/compound predicate). Stories and riddles amuse and entertain. ( simple sentence w/ compound subject and compound predicate) SIMPLE SENTENCE- contains one Independent clause.

COMPOUND SENTENCE- has one or more Independent/main clause. It usually joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunctions. (FANBOYS) EXAMPLES: Stories entertain, and riddles amuse. Stories entertain, and riddles amuse, but poems delight. She wanted to go on vacation, so she saved up her money. My pencil was broke so I borrowed one from my classmate. The boys went to the park, but they did not go to the zoo. We like pizza, and we like spaghetti. Note: semicolons may also be used to join the main clauses in a compound sentence. Examples: few wild animals live in China’s densely populated plains; in remote areas wild life is abundant. Tom reads Novels; his friend reads comics. Mary finished the assignment; then she went to bed.

COMPLEX SENTENCE- has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Examples: I like Toni Cade Bambara’s stories because they have real-life characters. When I read her stories, I enjoy them because they are true to life. While I enjoy classical music, I prefer rock and roll. Because the boys went to the park, they did not go to the zoo.

COMPOUND- COMPLEX- has two or more independent /main clauses and at least one subordinate clause. Examples : I read Frankenstein, which was written by Mary Shelly and I wrote a report about it. While Tom reads novels, Jack reads comics but Sam reads only magazines. Tom reads novels, but Jack reads comics because books are too difficult.

Generalization: How will you differentiate each sentence structure from the other? Based from the discussion, do you already recognize what types of sentences they are? What do you think is the significant of learning sentence structures in the field of communication?

TASK II- GROUP 2 : Elaborate this quotation, “ Each one is unique and thus special”. Explain creatively using sentence structures. T ASK III- GROUP 3: Create and perform a short dialogue. Make your lines creatively using the sentence structures.
