NIRUKTHI मृ मनी जीव स्थाने सन्धि स्थाने तात्पर्य च । ‘ Mru dhatu mani pratyaya sandhi sthane ‘ – means meeting place of mamsa , asthi , sira & snayu and ‘ Jeeva sthane ‘ means the place where jeeva resides.
DEFINITION जीव स्थाने तु मर्म स्यात् । ( A cc to Raj Nighantu ) Marma is place which is considered as Jeeva Sthana . मांसास्थिस्नायुधमनीसिरासन्धि समागम: । स्यान्मर्मेति च तेनात्र सुतरां जीवितं स्थितम् ॥ ( AH.Sa 4/38) The marmas are so called because they are meeting place of muscle, bones, tendons, arteries, veins & joints. Life entirely resides in them & any injuiry or assault to these causes danger to life.
मर्माणि मांससिरास्नाय्वस्थिसन्धिसन्निपाता: तेषु स्वाभावत एव विशेषेण प्राणास्तिष्ठन्ति । ( Su.Sa 6/15) Marma are confluence of muscles, veins, tendons, bones & joints. In these places prana (life) resides specially by nature. अपि च मरण कारीत्वं मर्म । Injuiry to this place leads to death.
विषमं स्पन्दनं यत्र पीडिते रुक् च मर्म तत् । ( AH.Sa 4/37) Marmas is that place, which has unusual throbbings & pain on touch. मरणकारित्वान्मर्म, मरणसदृशदुखदायित्वाद्वा । Marmas if gets injuired may lead to death or it causes that much pain which is equal to pain

Vishalyapranahara marmas विशल्यप्राणहराणि वायव्यानि, शल्यमुखावरुद्धो यावदन्तर्वायु स्तिष्ठति तावज्जीवति,उद्धृतमात्रे तु शल्ये मर्मस्थानाश्रितो वायुर्निष्क्रामति, तस्मात् सशल्यो जीवत्युद्धृतशल्यो म्रियते। (पाकात्पतितशल्यो वा जीवति) Visalya pranahara marmas are vayu dominant, as long as vayu remains inside obstructed by the mass of shalya (foreign body), the person survives but as soon as foreign body is pulled out, the vayu residing in marma sthana gets out, so person survives when foreign body is present inside & dies when it is pulled out. (he survives if foreign body comes out as a result of suppuration at marma sthana )
KSIPRA पादस्याङ्गुष्ठाङ्गुल्योर्मध्ये क्षिप्रं नाम मर्म, तत्र विद्धस्याक्षेपकेण मरणं | Ksipramarma is situated between big & second toe of foot, if it is injuired , death happens by convulsions.
TALAHRDAYA मध्यमाङ्गुलीमनुपूर्वेण मध्ये पादतलस्य तलहृदयं नाम, तत्र रुजाभिर्मरणं | Talahrdaya is in the centre of sole in straight line with middle toe, injuiry to this leads to severe pain & finally death. KURCHA क्षिप्रस्योपरिष्टादुभयत : कूर्चो नाम, तत्र पादस्य भ्रमणवेपने भवत: । Above kshipra on either side is kurcha , which injuired causes reeling & trembling.

KURCHSHIRAS गुल्फसन्धेरध उभयत: कूर्चशिर:, तत्र रुजाशौफौ । Below ankle joint on both sides is kurchashiras , it causes pain & inflammation. GULPHA पादजङ्घयो : सन्धाने गुल्फ:, तत्र रुज: स्तब्धपादता खञ्जता वा: | At the junction of foot & leg there is gulpha (ankle) marma , it causes severe pain, stiffness in foot or lameness.

BASTI अल्पमांसशोणितो अभ्यन्तरत: कटयां मूत्राशयो बस्ति:, तत्रापि सध्यो मरणं । With scanty musculature & blood, situated inside pelvis & reservoir of urine is basti (Urinary bladder) NABHI पक्वामाशययोर्मध्ये सिराप्रभवा नाभि:, तत्रापि सध्यो मरणं | Between stomach & intestines is nabhi , which is seat of origin of siras , injuiry leads to sudden death.

HRDAYA स्तनयोर्मध्यमधिष्ठायोरस्यामाशयद्वारं सत्वरजस्तमसामधिष्ठानं हृदयं, तत्रापि सध्य एव मरणं । Between breasts occupying the position in chest at the opening of stomach is hrdaya (heart) which is the seat of satva , rajas, tamas , on injuiry leads to immediate death.
STHANAROHITA स्तनचूचुकयोरुर्ध्वं द्वयङ्गुल उभयत: स्तनरोहिते, लोहितपुर्णकोष्ठय कासश्वासाभ्यां म्रियते । Sthanarohita are situated 2” above nipples of breast on both sides, by injuiry the patient dies of chest filling with blood. STHANAMOOLA स्तनयोरधस्ताद् द्वयङ्गुल उभयत: स्तनमूले, कफपुर्णकोष्ठतया कासश्वासाभ्यां म्रियते । Sthanamoola marmas , are located 2” below nipple on both sides, by injuiry the patient dies of chest filling with kapha causing cough & dysponea

APASTHAMBHA उभयत्रोरसो नाडयौ वातवहे अपस्तम्भौ नाम, तत्र वातपूर्णकोष्ठया कासश्वासाभ्यां च मरणम् । On both sides of chest there are two vata vaha nadis known as apasthambha , it causes death by filling air in chest & cough & dysponea .

KATIKATARUNA MARMA तत्र पृष्ठवंशनुभयत: प्रति श्रोणिकाण्डमस्थिनी कटीकतरुणे, तत्र शोणितक्षयात् पाण्डुर्विवर्णो हीनरुपश्च म्रियते । On the both sides of vertebral column towards pelvic bone there are two bones named katikataruna , o injuiry the patient dies, by loss of blood pale, discoloured & disfigured.
KUKUNDARA MARMA पार्श्वयोर्जघनबहिर्भागे पृष्ठवंश उभयतो कुकुन्दरे, तत्र स्पर्शाग्यन अध:काये चेष्टोपघातश्च । In sides in outer portion of perineum are kukundara on both sides of vertebral volumn , by injuiry they cause loss of sensation & movement in inferior extremity.
NITAMBA MARMA श्रोणीकाण्डयोर उपर्याय आशयाच्छादनौ पार्श्वान्तरप्रतिबद्धौ नितम्बौ, तत्राध:कायेशो दौर्बल्याच्च मरणं । Covering the space on the pelvic bone & attached to sides are nitamba marma , on injuiry they cause wasting of inferior extremity & finally death due to debility.
PARSHWASANDHI MARMA अध:पार्श्वान्तरप्रतिबद्धौ जघनपर्श्वमध्ययो तिर्यगूर्ध्वं च जघनात् पार्श्वसन्धी, तत्र लोहितपूर्णकोष्ठतया म्रियते । Below attached between sides situated in between hip & sides obliquely above buttocks are parshwasandhi , they lead to death by filling of blood in viscera.
BRHATI MARMA स्तनमूलादृजूभयत: पृष्ठवंशस्य बृहत्यौ, तत्र शोणितातिप्रवृत्तिनिमित्तैरुपद्रवैर्म्रियते । Parallel to the root of breasts on both sides of vertebral column are brhati marmas , they cause death due to complications of excessive haemorrhage .
AMSAPHALAKA MARMA पृष्ठोपरि पृष्ठवंश उभयत त्रिकसंबद्धे अंसफलके, तत्र बाहौ: स्वापशोषौ । Amsaphalaka are on the back on the both sides of vertebral column & attached to trika , its injuiry causes loss of sensation & wasting of arms
AMSA MARMA बाहुमूर्धग्रीवा मध्ये असपीठस्कन्धबन्धनाव अंसौ, तत्र स्तब्धबाहुता । Between the tip of arm & neck binding amsapitha & skandha are Amsa marma , injuiry there by causes stiffness in arms.
JATRURDHWA MARMAS
Neela & Manya Marma तत्र कण्ठनाडी उभतश्चतस्रो धमन्यो द्वे नीले द्वे च मन्ये व्यत्यासेन, तत्र मूकता स्वरवैकृत अरसाग्राहिता च । On both sides of kanthanadi are four blood vessels, 2 Nila & 2 Manya , on injuiry they cause dumbness, abnormality of voice & loss of taste sensation.
Matruka Marma ग्रीवायाम उभयता श्चतस्र: सिरा मातृका:, तत्र सध्यो मरणं । On both sides, are four blood vessels named Matruka , these lead to immediate death
KRKATIKA MARMA शिरोग्रीवयो: सन्धाने कृकाटिके, तत्र चलमूर्धता । At the junction of head & neck are Krkatika marma , these produce shaking of head.
VIDHURA MARMA कर्णपृष्ठतो अध:संश्रिते विधुरे, तत्र बाधिर्यं । On the back sides of ears situated below Vidhura marma , these on injuiry cause deafness.
PHANA MARMA घ्राणमार्गं उभयत: स्रोतोमार्गप्रतिबद्धे अभ्यन्तरत: फणे, तत्र गन्धाग्यानं । On both sides of the nasal passage attached inside are phana marma , injuiry cause loss of smell.
APANGA MARMA भ्रूपुच्छान्तयो:अधो अक्ष्णोर्बाह्य्तो अपाङ्गौ, तत्रान्ध्यं दृष्ट्युपघातो वा । At end of eyebrows below outside the eyes are Apanga marma , they produce blindness or defects in vision.
AAVARTA MARMA भ्रुवोरुपरि निम्नयोरावर्तौ नाम्, तत्राप्यान्ध्यं दृष्टयुपघातो वा । On eyebrows in depressed sites are Aavarta marma , injuiry cause blindness or defective vision.
SANKHA MARMA भ्रुवोरन्तयो:उपरि कर्णललाटयोर्मध्ये शङ्खौ, तत्र सध्यो मरणं । Above the ends of eyebrows & between ear & forehead are sankha marma , injuiry cause immediate death.
Utksepha marma शङ्खयोरपरि केशान्त उत्क्षेपौ, तत्र सशल्यो जीवेत् पाकात् पतितशल्यो वा नोद्धृतशल्य :। Above temples & at the end of hair- line are Utksepa marmas , on injuiry the patient lives till splinter is there or if falls out after suppuration but never after extraction of the foreign body.
STHAPANI MARMA भ्रुवोर्मध्ये स्थपनी, तत्रोत्क्षेपवत् । Between the eyebrows is sthapani , it produces results as in Utksepa .
SIMANTA MARMA पञ्च सन्धय: शिरसि विभक्ता: सीमन्ता नाम, तत्रोन्माद भयचित्तनाशैर्मरणं । Five demarcated lines of joints are simanta marmas , by injuiry here death ensues after insanity, fear & loss of mental functions.
SRNGATAKA MARMA घ्राणाश्रोत्राक्षिजिह्वासंतर्पणीनां सिराणां मध्ये सिरासन्निपात: शृङ्गाटकानि, तानि चत्वारि मर्माणि, तत्रापि सध्यो मरणं । In the centre of the confluence of blood vessels supplying nose, ear, eye & tongue are four Srngataka marmas , these also cause immediate death.
ADHIPATHI MARMA मस्तकाभ्यन्तरोपरिष्ठात् सिरासन्धि सन्निपातो रोमावर्तो अधिपति: तत्रापि सध्य एव । In the interior vertex superiorly is aggregation of the junction of blood vessels characterised outwardly by curly hairs, this is known as Adhipati , this also leads to death.
DHAMANI MARMA
GUDA MARMA स्थूलान्त्रबद्ध: सध्योघ्नो विड्वातवमनो गुद: । (AH.Sa.4/10) A marma called G uda is attached to the large intestine & eliminates the faeces & flatus & brings death quickly. APASTHAMBHA MARMA अपस्तम्भाव उर: पार्श्व नाडयाव अनिलवाहिनी । रक्तेन पूर्णकोष्ठो अत्र श्वासात्कासाच्च नश्यति ॥ (AH.Sa.4/15) Apasthambha are two marmas located on either side of the chest & they are two tube carrying air. If these are injuired death may occur due to over filling of blood in the chest & resulting in dyspnoea & cough.
VIDHURA MARMA अधस्तात्कर्णयोर्निम्ने विधुरे श्रुतिहारिणी । (AH.Sa.4/29) Vidhura are two below the ears & they destroy the hearing capacity. SRNGATAKA MARMA जिह्वाक्षिनासिकाश्रोत्रखचतुष्टयङ्गमे । तालु अन्यास्यानि चत्वारि स्रोतसां, तेषु मर्मसु ॥ विद्ध: श्रुङ्गाटकाख्येषु सध्यस्त्यजति जीवितम् । (AH.Sa4/34) Injuiry to vital spots called Srngataka causes immediate death. These are four in the palate & at the joining spot of the openings of tongue, eyes, nose & ears.
TRIMARMA
सप्त्तोत्तरं मर्मशतम अस्मिञ्छरीरे स्कन्धशाखासमाश्रितम । (Ca.Sid.9/3) 107 are marmas are located in Skandha (trunk) & sakhas (extremities) are present. In affliction of any one of these severe or excruciating pain manifests because these all are attached to chetana . Among those located in trunk are important than those of extremities.
HRDAYA MARMA तत्र हृदये दश धमन्य: प्राणौपानौ मनो बुद्धिश्चेतना महाभूतानि च नाभ्यामरा इव प्रतिष्ठतानि । ( Ca. Sid. 9/4) Among all these vital organs, in Hrdaya are 10 dhamanis (vessels), i.e prana & apana , mana (Mind), budhi (Intellect), cetana (consciousness) and pancha mahabhutas are attached with heart as spokes with nabhi .
SHIRAS शिरसि इन्द्रियाणि इन्द्रियप्राणवहानि च स्रोतांसि सूर्यमिव गभस्तय: संश्रितानि । In head, indriyas (sense organs) & channels carrying those (senses) & also prana are located in the same way as rays are in the sun.
BASTI MARMA बस्तिस्तु स्थूलगुदमुष्कसेवनीशुक्रमूत्रवाहिनीनां नाडीनां मध्ये मूत्रधारो अम्बुवहानां सर्वस्रोतसामुदधिरिवापगानां प्रतिष्ठा । Basti located in middle of sthulaguda (large intestine), muska (scrotum), sevani (raphe), sukravahini (seminal channels), mutravaha (urine carrying channels or uretes ) is receptacle of urine & in this all ambuvaha , (converge in that basti ) in the same way as all rivers converge to sea
Importance of Trimarmas ह्र्दये मूर्ध्नि बस्तौ च नृणां प्राणा: प्रतिष्ठिता:। तस्मात्तेषां सदा यत्नं कुर्वीत परिपालने । (Ca.Sid.9/9-10) Prana resides or located in heart, head & Urinary bladder, thus one should always make all efforts to protect these, or should protect these with efforts.
IMPORTANCE OF MARMA
संभिन्न जर्जरितकोष्ठ शिर:कपाला जीवन्ति शस्त्रनिहतैश्च शरीरदेशै: । छिन्नैश्च सक्थिभुजपादकरैरशेषै येषां न मर्मसु कृता विविधा: प्रहारा: ॥ ( Su.Sa 6/34) persons even with torn & mutilated trunk & skull, body parts injured with weapons or leg, arm, foot & hand severed completely survive if various injuires are not inflicted on marmas .
Injuiry to the neighbouring part by cutting, breaking, trauma, burning & tearing should be known to have features similar to those of marmas . There is no injuiry to a marma which is free from adverse effects or has mild ones, moreover, those injuired on marmas often get disabilty or die.
मर्माणि शल्यविषयार्धं उदाहरन्ति यस्माच्च मर्मासु हता न भवन्ति सध्य:। जीवन्ति तत्र यदि वैध्यगुणेन केचित्ते प्राप्नुवन्ति विकलत्वं असंशयं ॥ ( Su.Sa 6/33) M armas are said to cover half of the surgery because persons die immediately if they are injuired , even if some of them survive due to surgeon’s efficiency, they definitely become victim of disability.
Various disorders which take place in body making marmas as their location are generally most difficult even if treated carefully.
